Chapter 5 - The Firm's Reaction

By 10:30 AM, the glass-and-steel skyscraper housing the law offices of Mercer, Vale & Knox in downtown Washington D.C. was engulfed in a storm of panic. News of the federal subpoena served on Daniel Vance had traveled through the firm's legal network like wildfire.
Inside the executive boardroom on the 40th floor, Managing Partner Harrison Mercer—a formidable man in his late sixties with silver hair and a ruthless reputation—sat at the head of a massive mahogany table. Sitting opposite him was Daniel Vance, looking disheveled, his suit rumpled, his face slick with nervous sweat.
"Are you completely out of your mind, Daniel?" Harrison Mercer roared, slamming a heavy hand onto the polished table. "A federal grand jury subpoena? Served on your front lawn by the FBI? And who gave the order? Federal Judge Evelyn Hart!"
"Harrison, listen to me," Daniel stammered, wringing his hands frantically. "It's a personal misunderstanding! My wife... she's mentally unstable. She ran to her mother, who happens to be Judge Hart. Evelyn is abusing her federal position to launch a personal vendetta against me because of a domestic dispute!"
"A domestic dispute?" Harrison sneered, leaning forward, his eyes burning with outrage. "Daniel, I just received a courtesy call from the Chief Judge of the Eastern District of Virginia. They aren't just looking at your domestic life. The FBI has opened an official inquiry into your offshore client trusts and your financial transfers to a private physician!"
"The financial transfers were completely legal retainer payments for medical consulting!" Daniel lied desperately. "I can explain every dollar!"
"Shut up!" Harrison commanded, his voice echoing off the glass walls. "Do you have any idea what kind of damage this does to Mercer, Vale & Knox? We represent Fortune 500 companies, international banks, and federal contractors! We cannot have a senior partner dragged into federal court on charges of domestic abuse, bribery, and financial fraud!"
At that moment, the boardroom door opened, and a young associate named Jonathan Reed walked in, holding a tablet. Jonathan was a brilliant, principled young lawyer who had worked under Daniel for two years and had secretly grown disgusted by Daniel's arrogant and unethical practices.
"Mr. Mercer, sir," Jonathan said quietly. "We just received a formal notice from the U.S. Marshals Service. An emergency federal protective order has been granted to Clara Vance. Mr. Vance is ordered to surrender his passport, vacate his home immediately, and remain at least one thousand feet away from his daughter, Sophie, and his wife."
Daniel slammed his fist onto the table, jumping to his feet. "That's illegal! Judge Montgomery had no right to issue an ex parte order without a hearing! I am a partner here! Jonathan, draft an emergency motion to stay the order immediately!"
Jonathan looked at Daniel, his face completely calm and unbothered by Daniel's outburst. "I can't do that, Mr. Vance. The motion was personally reviewed and signed by the Chief Magistrate based on certified forensic photographic evidence submitted by the FBI Forensic Unit."
"Forensic evidence?" Harrison Mercer's voice dropped to a dangerous whisper as he turned his piercing gaze back to Daniel. "What forensic evidence, Daniel?"
Daniel swallowed hard, unable to speak as panic choked his throat.
Jonathan placed a sealed envelope on the table. "The FBI attached high-resolution photographs of Mrs. Vance's injuries to the service packet, Mr. Mercer. Severe soft-tissue trauma across the back and ribs, consistent with repeated physical assault."
Harrison Mercer stared at the envelope, then looked back at Daniel with profound disgust. "You idiot. You didn't just break the law; you attacked the daughter of one of the most powerful federal judges on the East Coast, and you brought the full weight of the federal government down on this firm's head."
"Harrison, please! Give me twenty-four hours to fix this!" Daniel begged, his voice trembling violently. "I'll make Clara drop the charges! I'll pay whatever it takes!"
"You won't do anything in the name of Mercer, Vale & Knox," Harrison said coldly, standing up and buttoning his suit jacket. "Effective immediately, Daniel, you are placed on mandatory administrative leave. Your access to firm servers is revoked. Security will escort you out of the building. If you use firm resources to fight Judge Hart or your wife, we will terminate your partnership interest instantly."

"You're throwing me to the wolves?" Daniel gasped, unable to believe his firm was abandoning him so quickly.
"No, Daniel," Harrison replied, walking toward the door without looking back. "You threw yourself to the wolves the moment you laid a hand on Evelyn Hart's daughter."
