Chapter 2: The Secret Inside The House

The first person I suspected was the person who had stood beside me through every tragedy.

And that terrified me more than any enemy ever could.

I stared at Amelia’s handwriting until the letters stopped looking like words.

*Don’t trust anyone in the house.*

Not the company.

Not the people outside.

The house.

My house.

The place where I had spent twenty years believing I was surrounded by loyalty.

A place where every hallway held a memory of my daughter.

A place where her childhood drawings still hung in the study.

A place where I had kept her bedroom untouched, as if one day she might walk through the door and complain that I was being dramatic.

Daniel stood across from me, watching my face carefully.

“Charles,” he said quietly, “what does that note mean?””

I folded the paper immediately.

Too quickly.

Daniel noticed.

He noticed everything.

That was why he had been my assistant for fifteen years.

“Where is everyone from the house tonight?”” I asked.

He frowned.

“The staff? Most of them are at the mansion because of the gala preparations. Why?””

I looked toward the security cameras displayed on the wall.

“Because someone knew.””

“Knew what?””

“That Amelia was alive.””

Daniel went silent.

The room felt smaller.

Ella sat on the chair beside me, wrapped in a soft blanket. She watched us with wide eyes, holding a glass of water with both hands.

I lowered my voice.

“Someone followed her. Someone knew she had a child. Someone knew she was sending this ring to me.””

Daniel shook his head slowly.

“Charles, Amelia died.””

The words hit harder than they should have.

Not because I believed them.

Because I had spent twenty years forcing myself to.

I looked at him.

“No.””

Daniel stopped.

I had never said that word before.

Not about Amelia.

Not after the police report.

Not after the funeral service.

Not after everyone told me to accept reality.

“No,” I repeated.

“My daughter didn’t die.””

Daniel looked at the ring in my hand.

Then at Ella.

And for the first time all night, I saw doubt on his face.

“Then where has she been?””

I didn’t have an answer.

And that frightened me.

A soft voice interrupted us.

“Mr. Sterling?””

I turned.

Ella was looking at me.

“Yes, sweetheart?””

“Are you mad at my mommy?””

The question caught me completely off guard.

I looked at the little girl who had crossed a city alone because her mother trusted her with the impossible.

“No.””

The answer came instantly.

“I’m not mad.””

Ella looked down.

“Mommy said you might be.””

My chest tightened.

“Why would she think that?””

Ella played with the corner of the blanket.

“Because she said you would think she left you.””

The room went silent.

I looked away.

Because the little girl was right.

For twenty years, I had believed Amelia chose to leave me.

That she rejected my warnings.

That she walked away because she was angry.

But what if she hadn’t?

What if she had been running?

What if she had needed me and I wasn’t there?

Daniel stepped closer.

“Charles…”

I raised a hand.

Not because I didn’t want to hear him.

Because I needed one moment to breathe.

I looked at Ella.

“Did your mommy ever talk about me?””

The little girl nodded.

“All the time.””

My throat tightened.

“What did she say?””

Ella smiled faintly.

“She said you made the best pancakes.””

I blinked.

A memory appeared instantly.

Amelia at age six, sitting on the kitchen counter with flour on her nose.

“You burned them again, Daddy.””

And I had laughed.

“I’m creating a new recipe.””

“No, you’re creating smoke.””

For a moment, I forgot I was in a security room.

Forgot the danger.

Forgot the fear.

I saw my little girl again.

Then Ella spoke again.

“She said you were stubborn.””

I almost smiled.

“She was right.””

“She said you loved her more than anything.””

The smile disappeared.

Because that was the one thing I had never doubted.

I loved her.

I just failed her.

A knock came at the door.

Everyone froze.

One of the security guards entered.

“Mr. Sterling, we checked the cameras.””

“And?””

The guard looked uncomfortable.

“We found the man in the dark coat.””

I stood.

“Who is he?””

The guard handed me a tablet.

The image showed a man walking through the gala crowd.

Tall.

Gray hair.

A scar near his jaw.

I stared.

I didn’t recognize him.

But Daniel did.

His face changed.

“Impossible.””

I turned.

“You know him?””

Daniel looked like he had seen a ghost.

“Charles…”

“Who is he?””

Daniel swallowed.

“That’s Adrian Vale.””

The name meant nothing to me.

Until Daniel continued.

“He was Amelia’s fiancé.””

The air disappeared from my lungs.

“No.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

I looked back at the screen.

The man who had been watching Ella.

The man who disappeared when he saw the ring.

Adrian Vale.

The man Amelia wanted to marry twenty years ago.

The man I had warned her about.

The man she defended.

My hands curled into fists.

“What is he doing here?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Because neither of us knew.

A movement caught my attention.

Ella was staring at Adrian’s picture.

Not with confusion.

With recognition.

I knelt beside her.

“Ella?””

She looked at me.

“That’s Uncle Adrian.””

My blood went cold.

“Uncle?””

She nodded.

“He comes to our house.””

The room went silent.

“Our house?””

Ella nodded again.

“Mommy says I shouldn’t talk to him when she isn’t there.””

I felt something inside me break.

“Where is your house?””

Ella looked at the floor.

“I don’t know the address.””

“That’s okay. Tell me what it looks like.””

She thought carefully.

“There’s a big black gate.””

My mind started racing.

A big black gate.

Hundreds of houses had them.

“Anything else?””

“There’s a room with lots of old pictures.””

I froze.

Old pictures.

“Whose pictures?””

Ella looked at me.

“Yours.””

The answer sent a chill through me.

“My pictures?””

She nodded.

“Mommy keeps them hidden.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Charles…”

I barely heard him.

Because another thought entered my mind.

A horrible thought.

If Amelia had been alive all this time…

If Adrian knew…

Then why hadn’t he told me?

Why had everyone allowed me to believe my daughter was dead?

My phone suddenly rang.

Everyone jumped.

The number was unknown.

I stared at the screen.

Then answered.

“Hello?””

For several seconds, there was only silence.

Then a woman’s voice.

A voice I had not heard in twenty years.

A voice that turned my entire body numb.

“Dad.””

I couldn’t speak.

The world stopped.

“Amelia?””

A quiet sob came through the phone.

Not a stranger’s voice.

Not a memory.

My daughter.

Alive.

“Dad, you have Ella.””

I gripped the phone tighter.

“Yes.””

My voice broke.

“Yes, I have her.””

“Listen to me.””

Her voice was shaking.

“Do not take her home.””

I looked at Daniel.

“Why?””

A pause.

Then Amelia whispered:

“Because the person who tried to kill me is still living under your roof.””

The call ended.

I stood frozen.

Daniel stared at me.

“Charles?””

I slowly lowered the phone.

Ella looked up.

“Was that Mommy?””

I looked at the little girl.

At my daughter’s ring.

At the note warning me not to trust anyone in my own house.

Then I made the decision that would change everything.

“Daniel.””

“Yes?””

“Get every security file from the mansion.””

He nodded.

“What are you looking for?””

I looked toward the ballroom where hundreds of powerful people were still waiting.

Then toward the city outside.

Somewhere, Amelia was hiding.

Somewhere, someone had been lying to me for twenty years.

“I’m looking for the person who erased my daughter from my life.””

A message appeared on the security tablet.

The guard who had been watching the cameras suddenly stepped forward.

“Mr. Sterling…”

I turned.

“What?””

His face had gone pale.

“We found something else from the gala footage.””

I walked closer.

“What?””

He replayed the video.

The image showed Adrian Vale entering the ballroom.

But he wasn’t alone.

Someone had opened the door for him.

Someone wearing the Sterling family staff uniform.

The guard paused the footage.

“Sir…”

I stared at the frozen image.

Because I recognized the person standing beside Adrian.

The person who had worked inside my home for eighteen years.

The person I had trusted with every secret.

The person who had helped raise Amelia.

And below the paused image, the security system displayed one name:

*Margaret Sterling.*
