Chapter 6: The Truth My Father Buried
The photograph felt heavier than anything I had ever held.
Not because it was old.
Not because it revealed a secret.
Because it changed the meaning of my entire life.
I stared at the image under the desk lamp.
My father.
Edmund Sterling.
A man I had spent my childhood trying to understand.
A man who built an empire with his bare hands.
A man who taught me that loyalty was everything.
Standing beside him was Adrian Vale.
Young.
Confident.
Smiling.
And beside them was Margaret.
My wife’s sister.
A woman who had claimed she entered my family by accident.
But she hadn’t.
She had been there from the beginning.
Daniel looked over my shoulder.
“Charles…”
I didn’t answer.
I couldn’t.
My eyes were locked on the photograph.
The three people in the picture weren’t standing like strangers.
They looked comfortable.
Like they belonged together.
Like they had shared a secret long before Amelia was born.
“Where did this come from?”” Daniel asked.
I turned the photograph over again.
The message remained.
*The betrayal started before Amelia was born.*
My father’s handwriting.
No doubt.
I knew every line.
Every sharp angle.
He wrote like he spoke.
Direct.
Cold.
Certain.
I opened the envelope again.
There was something else inside.
A small piece of paper folded into four sections.
I unfolded it carefully.
Only one sentence was written.
*Charles, if you are reading this, then they failed to stop the truth.*
My heart pounded.
They.
Not him.
Not one person.
They.
I continued reading.
**You will want answers. You will want revenge. Do not make the mistake I made.
Find Amelia first. She is the only person who knows what I discovered.**
I stopped.
Amelia knew.
My daughter had known.
Before she disappeared.
I looked at Margaret.
She was standing near the door.
Silent.
Watching.
“Did you know about this?””
Her eyes filled with pain.
“No.””
I held up the photograph.
“You were in this.””
She looked at the image.
Then looked away.
“I knew about Adrian.””
“You knew him before Amelia met him.””
“Yes.””
The answer was quiet.
I stepped closer.
“How?””
Margaret swallowed.
“Because my father worked for your father.””
I froze.
“What?””
“My father was Edmund Sterling’s closest advisor.””
Daniel looked confused.
“Why didn’t anyone know this?””
Margaret gave a sad smile.
“Because your father removed him from the company records.””
“Why?””
“Because he discovered something.””
I felt the pieces moving.
“What?””
Margaret looked at the photograph.
“Your father discovered that someone inside Sterling International had been stealing from him.””
I frowned.
“Adrian?””
“No.””
She looked at me.
“Someone much closer.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Who?””
Margaret shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
I looked at the note again.
My father had hidden information.
He had trusted Amelia with it.
Not me.
Why?
The question hurt.
But another question hurt more.
Why had Amelia never told me?
A sound came from the hallway.
Everyone turned.
A security guard appeared.
“Sir.””
“What?””
“We found something outside.””
He handed me a plastic evidence bag.
Inside was a small silver bracelet.
My breath stopped.
I knew it.
I had bought it when Amelia was sixteen.
A simple bracelet.
Nothing expensive.
Nothing a billionaire’s daughter needed.
But she loved it because I had chosen it myself.
She used to wear it every day.
Until the accident.
“Where did you find this?””
The guard looked at Margaret.
“In the garden.””
My eyes moved toward her.
“What were you doing outside?””
Margaret’s expression changed.
“I wasn’t.””
“You were near the garden tonight.””
“No.””
“Security footage says otherwise.””
She went silent.
Daniel looked between us.
“Charles…”
I raised the bracelet.
“Someone left this here.””
Margaret whispered:
“No.””
“What?””
Her face had gone pale.
“She wouldn’t.””
“Who?””
Margaret looked at me.
“Amelia.””
The room became quiet.
“You think Amelia left this?””
Margaret nodded slowly.
“She used to do that when she was scared.””
I frowned.
“What do you mean?””
“She created trails.””
I stared.
“Trails?””
“Hidden signs. Small things only people close to her would recognize.””
My fingers tightened around the bracelet.
“She left this for me?””
“I think so.””
The words gave me something I hadn’t felt in twenty years.
Hope.
Not the fragile kind.
The dangerous kind.
The kind that made you willing to tear apart the world to find the person you lost.
I turned to Daniel.
“Find every camera recording from the mansion tonight.””
“We already checked.””
“Check again.””
“Charles—”
“Every angle.””
My voice hardened.
“I want to know who entered this house.””
Daniel nodded.
Within minutes, the security room filled with screens.
Footage after footage.
The mansion.
The gates.
The halls.
The garden.
Everyone watched.
Waiting.
Then one camera froze.
The garden entrance.
A figure appeared.
Wearing a dark coat.
Walking slowly.
My heart raced.
“Zoom in.””
The guard adjusted the image.
The face appeared.
And I felt the same shock as before.
Victor Hale.
But this time, he wasn’t carrying Ella.
He was carrying something else.
A file.
He walked directly to my garden.
Directly to the hidden area where Amelia’s bracelet was found.
“What is he doing there?”” Daniel whispered.
I didn’t answer.
Because the footage continued.
Victor stopped.
He looked around.
Then he placed the file beneath a stone.
A hiding place.
A message.
“Get that file.””
The guards moved immediately.
But before they could leave, another image appeared.
A second person entered the garden.
My entire body went still.
It was Margaret.
She walked toward the same stone.
She picked up the file.
Then she looked directly at the camera.
As if she knew someone was watching.
Daniel turned toward her.
“Margaret.””
She didn’t move.
Because she knew.
The secret was over.
“You lied,” I said.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I protected Amelia.””
“You took the file.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
She looked at the screen.
Then whispered:
“Because Victor wanted me to.””
The room exploded with silence.
“Victor was controlling you?””
Margaret shook her head.
“No.””
“Then explain.””
She looked at me.
And for the first time, I saw something I had never seen before.
Shame.
“I was the one who asked Victor to come.””
My jaw tightened.
“What?””
Margaret closed her eyes.
“Because I thought he could save her.””
I stared.
“Save who?””
She opened her eyes.
“Amelia.””
A thousand questions filled my mind.
But before I could ask, every screen in the security room went black.
The lights flickered.
Then died.
Someone had cut the power.
The guards immediately moved.
“Backup system activating.””
But before the screens returned, a single message appeared.
White letters on a black screen.
Not from the security system.
From someone controlling it.
*Charles, stop searching.*
I stared.
Another line appeared.
*You already lost Amelia once.*
A pause.
Then:
*Don’t make me take Ella too.*
My blood ran cold.
Daniel looked at me.
“Charles…”
I stepped toward the screen.
“Who sent this?””
No one answered.
Then one final message appeared.
A name.
Not Adrian.
Not Victor.
Not Margaret.
A name I had not heard in twenty years.
A name that made Margaret collapse into the nearest chair.
*Edmund Sterling.*
My dead father.
May you like
And beneath his name were four words.
*He was never dead.*
