Chapter 5 - The Blindside

The courtroom was cold, smelling of old paper and wood polish. Robert sat at the defense table, looking
immaculate in a bespoke grey suit, his hair perfectly coiffed. Marla sat in the front row of the gallery, wearing
a tight cream dress and a smug smile, her eyes darting around as if she were attending a movie premiere.
When I walked in, wearing a simple but elegant navy dress, my silver hair styled in soft waves, Robert didn't
even look up. He was busy whispering to his lead attorney, a high-priced corporate shark named Bradley Vance (no
relation to Margaret, thankfully).
"All rise," the bailiff called out as Judge Evelyn Harrison entered. She was a stern woman in her late fifties,
with sharp eyes that immediately scanned the room, lingering for a moment on Marla before focusing on the
attorneys.
"We are here today regarding the matter of Richardson v. Richardson," Judge Harrison announced. "Mr. Vance, I
believe your client has filed a motion for an emergency temporary settlement and eviction order?"
Bradley Vance stood up, smoothing his tie. "Yes, Your Honor. My client, Robert Richardson, is seeking to
secure his sole properties, including the primary residence and the operating assets of Richardson Holdings. Mrs.
Richardson is unfortunately in extremely poor health and is no longer capable of maintaining the estate. We have
offered a highly generous living arrangement that ensures her medical care is fully covered."
Margaret stood up, her posture perfect. "Your Honor, if I may. We object to the motion in its entirety.
Furthermore, we have filed a counter-claim of financial fraud, asset commingling, and grand larceny against Mr.
Richardson."
Robert chuckled out loud. The judge slammed her gavel. "Mr. Richardson, control yourself. Ms. Vance, please
proceed."
Margaret opened her leather folder, pulling out a stack of documents. "Your Honor, over the past two years, Mr.
Richardson has systematically transferred over twelve million dollars from joint personal accounts and Richardson
Holdings corporate accounts into private shell companies. These funds were used to purchase a luxury penthouse,
high-end sports vehicles, and jewelry for his associate, Marla, who is currently sitting in this courtroom."
Bradley Vance waved his hand dismissively. "Your Honor, these are standard corporate expenses and
investments. My client has full executive authority to manage the funds of Richardson Holdings."
"He would have executive authority," Margaret countered, her voice rising with dramatic precision, "if he were
still the majority stakeholder. However, as of forty-eight hours ago, Mr. Richardson is no longer the majority
owner, nor does he hold executive control of Richardson Holdings."
The courtroom went dead silent.

Robert stopped smiling. He leaned forward, his face turning a pale shade of grey. "What are you talking about?"
he muttered.
"Your Honor," Margaret continued, handing a set of certified documents to the bailiff to present to the judge.
"Two years ago, Mrs. Evelyn Richardson quietly purchased the outstanding corporate debt of Richardson Holdings
through her family's trust, the Kingsbury Foundation. Under the original corporate charter from 1978, which Mr.
Richardson signed himself, any default or restructuring of corporate debt allows the primary debt holder to convert
their holdings into voting shares."
Judge Harrison looked over the papers, her eyebrows raised in absolute fascination. "And according to these
files, Mrs. Richardson now controls sixty-two percent of the voting shares of Richardson Holdings."
Robert jumped to his feet, his chair screeching against the hardwood floor. "This is a lie! She's a sick old
woman! She doesn't know anything about finance! She couldn't have done this!"
"Mr. Richardson, sit down!" Judge Harrison roared, slamming her gavel. "Another outburst like that and I will
hold you in contempt."
Robert sank back into his chair, his eyes wide with horror as he stared at me. I looked back at him, meeting his
gaze, and gave him the exact same smile I had given him in my bedroom three days ago.

It was the smile of a woman who had finally reclaimed her life.
