Chapter 8 - The Cornered Beast

When a man like Robert Richardson loses his power, he doesn't go quietly. He turns into a cornered beast,
striking out at anyone and anything within reach.
A week after his removal from the board, Robert’s legal team filed a desperate counter-suit, accusing me of
elder abuse, corporate espionage, and mental incompetence. They leaked a series of highly edited medical records
to the press, attempting to paint me as a senile, dying woman who was being manipulated by her lawyer.
The tabloids jumped on the story. “Richardson Holdings Coup: Is the New Majority Owner Mentally Fit?”
read one headline.
Margaret called me early in the morning. "Evelyn, they're trying to force a court-ordered psychological
evaluation. Robert thinks if he can prove you are incompetent, he can nullify the debt conversion and regain
control."
"Let them try," I said, taking a sip of my morning tea. "I'm happy to take any test they want."
"I know you are," Margaret chuckled. "But we're going to do one better. We're going to hold a live, televised
press conference at the corporate headquarters. You will address the shareholders directly. Let the public see
exactly who Evelyn Richardson is."
The press conference was scheduled for Friday afternoon. The media room at Richardson Holdings was packed
with reporters, cameras, and bright lights.
When I stepped up to the podium, wearing a sharp cream suit, looking healthy, vibrant, and completely in
control, a hush fell over the room. I didn't look like a woman who was dying or losing her mind. I looked like a
CEO.
"Good afternoon," I began, my voice clear and projecting perfectly through the microphone. "Over the past
week, there have been many rumors circulating regarding my health and my capability to lead Richardson
Holdings. I am here today to put those rumors to rest."
I looked directly into the main camera lens. "Forty-eight years ago, my husband and I started this company in a
tiny rented office. Over the decades, I watched as the company grew, but I also watched as the man I built it with
lost his way. Robert Richardson did not just betray his marriage; he betrayed this company, its employees, and its
shareholders by embezzling millions of dollars for his personal use."
I opened my folder, displaying the certified medical reports from the independent doctors appointed by the
court. "I am in excellent health. My mind is sharp, my heart is strong, and my resolve to protect this company is
absolute. The court-appointed forensic audit has fully documented Mr. Richardson's fraud, and we have turned all
evidence over to the federal authorities."

A reporter raised his hand. "Mrs. Richardson, what about your husband's claims that you are acting out of
revenge?"
I smiled, the exact same confident smile that had terrified Robert. "Revenge is an emotional reaction, young
man. What I am doing is simply good business."
The room erupted in applause and questions, but I simply stepped away from the podium.
In the back of the room, standing near the exit, was Robert. He had snuck in using an old security pass. He
looked broken, his clothes wrinkled, his face pale as he watched the media flock around me. He tried to walk
toward me, but two security guards immediately stepped in his way, blocking his path.

He looked at me, his eyes pleading, but I simply turned my back on him. He was no longer a part of my story.
