Chapter 3 - The Freezing Point

The dining room went dead silent, save for the faint cooing of baby Lily from her stroller.

Evan stood frozen at the head of the table, his phone still gripped tightly in his hand as if holding onto a lifeline that had just snapped in half. His face, flushed with expensive wine and sudden terror, drained of color until he looked like wet chalk.

“This… this is a joke,” Evan stammered, looking frantically between me and his mother. “Mom, tell me this is some kind of sick retirement prank. She’s senile! She doesn't have the authority to fire me! The board loves me! I closed the Henderson contract!”

Gloria stood up so abruptly her crystal wine glass tipped over, sending a pool of dark red Merlot spreading across the pristine white linen tablecloth like spreading blood. “Margaret! Have you lost your absolute mind? You are ruining your own family over a domestic dispute? Evan is your grandson-in-law! He brings home the bacon!”

“He brings home nothing, Gloria,” I said, standing up from my chair and smoothing down my blazer. “He lives off dividends generated by my labor and manages a subsidiary that I personally carved out of my own retirement portfolio to give him a sense of purpose. A purpose he clearly mistook for absolute monarchy.”

Emily watched us all with wide, disbelieving eyes. For months, she had been told by Evan and Gloria that she was useless, that her mother thought she was a failure, and that if she ever left, she would starve on the streets with a baby in her arms. Now, watching her monstrous husband unravel in real-time, the fog in her eyes began to lift.

“Evan,” Emily whispered, her voice gaining a tiny fraction of its old steel. “Is it true? Do you not own any of this?”

Evan snapped his head toward her, his face twisting into a mask of pure fury. The mask of the loving provider dropped away instantly, revealing the small, insecure bully beneath. “Shut up, you ungrateful bitch! This is all your fault! If you didn't whine to your rich mother every time I told you to clean up, none of this would have happened!”

He raised his hand, instinctively taking a step toward Emily with his palm cocked back.

He didn't even get halfway.

Before my hand could twitch toward my own phone, the heavy front door of the mansion burst open with a resounding bang. Four men in dark suits, led by Daniel Cho himself carrying a heavy leather briefcase, strode into the foyer like federal marshals executing a high-stakes raid.

“Trustees on-site,” Daniel announced, his voice echoing through the open-concept living space. “Property reclamation in progress.”

Evan spun around, his face purple with rage as he pointed a trembling finger at Daniel. “You get out of my house! I am calling the police! This is trespassing! I’ll sue you for every penny you’re worth!”

Daniel didn't even blink. He pulled a crisp, laminated legal document from his briefcase and held it up. “Mr. Evan Vance, pursuant to Section 9 of the Hartwell Family Trust Indenture, your right of habitation terminated as of 18:42 hours. You have thirty minutes to gather your personal effects and vacate the premises. Failure to do so will result in forcible removal by county sheriff deputies currently waiting outside in three cruisers.”

Gloria shrieked, clutching her pearls as if they were about to be ripped from her throat. “Cruisers?! For a family dinner?! Are you insane?! I demand to speak to a manager!”

“There is no manager, Gloria,” I said, walking over to Emily and resting a comforting hand on her shoulder. “There is only the exit.”
