Chapter 9 - The Arraignment

The county courthouse on Tuesday morning was a circus. Reporters, bloggers, and curious onlookers crammed into the hallway outside courtroom 3B, all holding their smartphones aloft to capture the arrival of the disgraced former executive.

When the heavy oak doors opened and Evan Vance was led down the corridor by two bailiffs, the hallway erupted into a cacophony of camera shutters and shouted questions.

“Mr. Vance! Is it true you embezzled from your mother-in-law’s trust?”

“Did you funnel company funds to your mistress, Veronica Sterling?”

“Do you have any comment on the Bluebird Protocol?”

Evan looked pale, hollow-eyed, and utterly defeated. The custom suits and arrogant smirks were entirely gone, replaced by a standard-issue county orange jumpsuit that hung loosely on his frame. He kept his eyes locked on the floor, ignoring the flashing lights until he caught sight of me and Emily sitting in the front row of the gallery.

His steps hitched for a fraction of a second. His face twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated venom as he recognized my daughter sitting tall, composed, and wearing a sharp, tailored white blazer that commanded the entire room.

Emily didn't flinch. She didn't lower her eyes. She stared right back at him with the cold, absolute indifference of a queen looking down at a convicted felon.

Inside the courtroom, Judge Henderson presided over the arraignment with an expression of weary professional disdain.

“Defendant Evan Vance,” Judge Henderson read from the case file, adjusting his glasses. “Facing three counts of wire fraud, two counts of grand larceny, and corporate espionage in connection with Apex Logistics. How does the defendant plead?”

Evan’s newly appointed public defender—a tired-looking man with a stack of paperwork nearly a foot high—stood up nervously. “Not guilty at this time, Your Honor, pending review of the asset seizure warrants.”

“The asset seizure warrants are federally backed, Mr. Miller,” Judge Henderson replied dryly. “Given the flight risk associated with the defendant’s offshore shell company holdings in the Cayman Islands, bail is denied. Defendant is remanded to custody pending trial.”

Evan slammed his hands down on the defense table, standing up so fast his chair rattled. “Your Honor, this is an outrage! My mother-in-law is setting me up! She used her wealth to frame me! I demand—”

“Sit down, Mr. Vance, or I will hold you in direct contempt of court,” Judge Henderson snapped, banging his gavel once with a sharp, echoing crack. “Bail denied. Next case.”

As the bailiffs grabbed Evan by the arms and dragged him kicking and protesting back through the side door, I leaned over to Emily and whispered, “Well, that concludes act one.”
