Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary

The penthouse suite at the Grand Regency Hotel was bathed in soft, warm amber light. Far below, the bustling
skyline of the city stretched out like a blanket of glittering diamonds. It was a stark contrast to the chaotic, violent
atmosphere of the suburban mansion Claire had called home for nearly a decade.
Claire sat on the plush velvet sofa, a thick, cashmere blanket wrapped around her shoulders. She held a cup of
chamomile tea—iced, as the mere thought of hot liquid made her skin crawl with phantom agony. The left side of
her face was covered in a specialized, soothing medical dressing, covering the angry, blistered second-degree burns
that Daniel had inflicted upon her.
Miriam Cole stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, a sleek tablet in her hand, her expression intensely
focused. The veteran attorney looked every bit the legal assassin she was reputed to be, dressed in a sharp charcoal
pantsuit with her silver hair cut into a precise, no-nonsense bob.
"The police executed the domestic violence arrest warrant about an hour ago, Claire," Miriam said calmly,
turning around. "Daniel tried to throw a massive tantrum on the front lawn, claiming you attacked him first, but the
officer who escorted you earlier had already logged the timeline. Plus, the hospital photos leave no room for
debate. He spent the night in a holding cell."
Claire let out a long, shaky breath. A strange mix of relief and profound sadness washed over her. "And
Vanessa?"
Miriam smiled coldly. "Vanessa is currently realizing that her dream beauty studio is completely dead in the
water. The frozen asset order I filed went into effect at noon. Every single dollar Daniel stole from you and
funneled into her accounts has been legally locked down. She can't touch a penny."
Claire leaned her head back against the sofa, closing her eyes. "I gave him eight years of my life, Miriam. I
looked past the constant criticisms, the gaslighting, the way he slowly isolated me from my friends. I thought if I
just worked harder, if I was sweeter, he would become the man I fell in love with again."
"Men like Daniel don't change, Claire. They just get better at hiding their true nature until they think they
completely own you," Miriam said gently, walking over to sit beside her. "Your father knew Daniel’s type from the
very beginning. That’s why Arthur structured your inheritance the way he did. He didn't want to control you from
beyond the grave, but he wanted to make sure you had an absolute safety net if Daniel ever showed his true colors."
"I used to think my father was being paranoid," Claire admitted, touching the edge of the medical dressing on
her face. "But today... today Daniel would have broken me completely if I didn't have the financial power to fight
back."
"Well, you do have the power. And now, it's time to use it," Miriam said, opening a thick leather folder on the
coffee table. "Let’s talk about the logistics company Daniel operates—Sterling Global Transport. He thinks he’s a
self-made mogul. What he conveniently forgets is that three years ago, when his business was failing, he took out a
massive three-million-dollar commercial loan to purchase his primary shipping warehouse."
Claire’s eyes sharpened. The pain in her jaw seemed to fade, replaced by a cold, calculating focus. "And that
loan was issued by Vance Mutual."
"Exactly," Miriam replied, handing Claire a document. "Daniel has been aggressively skimming money from
your personal accounts specifically to make the monthly payments on that loan because his actual business revenue
is failing due to terrible management. Now that his access to your money is completely severed, and his personal
assets are frozen pending the embezzlement investigation, he is going to miss the next payment due in five days."
"What are the terms of the default clause?" Claire asked, her voice steadying.
"Standard Vance Mutual high-risk terms," Miriam stated with a sharp glint in her eyes. "A single missed
payment gives the lender the right to declare the entire balance immediately due and payable. If he fails to pay
within forty-eight hours of the default notice, Vance Mutual can initiate an expedited non-judicial foreclosure on
the warehouse, seizing the building and effectively shutting down Sterling Global Transport permanently."
Claire looked at the document, seeing the bold signature of Daniel Sterling at the bottom of the contract. He
had signed it years ago, arrogant and completely confident that he could always manipulate Claire into covering his
debts. He had treated her like a bottomless ATM, an object to be commanded and abused.
"Miriam," Claire said, her voice dropping to a calm, authoritative whisper. "Do not offer him a settlement. Do
not grant him an extension. The moment that clock strikes midnight on the fifth day, I want the default notice
served directly to his cell or his office. I want him to realize exactly who holds the key to his survival."
"Consider it done," Miriam replied.
As Miriam left the hotel room, Claire walked over to the grand window, looking out at the vast city. The
physical burn on her face would eventually heal, leaving only a faint scar as a reminder of her survival. But the

emotional shackles had been completely shattered. Daniel thought he could throw her out like garbage, but he was
about to discover that the woman he abused didn't just leave—she took the entire world he built along with her.
