Chapter 5 - The Collapse of Sterling Global

The corporate headquarters of Sterling Global Transport was in a state of absolute, unmitigated panic. Telephones
were ringing off the hooks, printers were jamming, and the main shipping yard outside was completely gridlocked
with massive eighteen-wheeler trucks that couldn't leave the docks.
Daniel Sterling sat in his high-backed leather executive chair, staring blankly at a bright neon-pink piece of
paper resting on his glass desk. It was an official Notice of Default and Intention to Foreclose, hand-delivered by a
licensed process server exactly ten minutes ago.
The deadline had passed. Without access to Claire’s personal accounts, and with his private funds frozen by
the court order, Daniel had missed the crucial three-million-dollar commercial loan payment to Vance Mutual. He
had tried desperately to secure emergency funding from three different local banks, but the moment their
underwriting departments ran a standard background check and saw the active domestic violence charges and
pending corporate embezzlement investigation, they rejected his applications instantly.
The door to his office slammed open, and Vanessa burst in, her face pale, her expensive designer sunglasses
pushed up frantically into her blonde hair.
"Daniel! The bank just completely rejected my appeal to unfreeze my personal checking account!" she
shrieked, slamming her designer handbag onto his desk. "They said it's tied to a criminal investigation! My
landlord for the beauty studio just sent me a formal eviction notice because the security deposit check bounced!
You told me you had this completely handled!"
"Shut up, Vanessa!" Daniel roared, slamming his fist onto the desk, causing the glass to rattle violently. "Do
you think I’m enjoying this? Look at this paper! Vance Mutual is foreclosing on the entire warehouse! If they take
this building, Sterling Global is completely dead! Everything I built over the last ten years will be wiped out by
next week!"
"Well, do something!" Vanessa cried, her voice cracking with selfish desperation. "Call Claire! Beg her! Tell
her you’re sorry! You know how soft she is. Just buy her some flowers, cry a little bit, tell her it was a temporary
moment of insanity because of stress! She’ll drop the charges! She always does whatever you want!"
Daniel swallowed hard, the terrifying reality of his situation finally sinking deep into his bones. His sister was
right about one thing—he was completely out of options. His pride was a luxury he could no longer afford.
He grabbed his desk phone, dialed Claire’s personal cell phone number, and held the receiver to his ear, his
heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. Ring... ring... ring...
"Hello, Daniel."

It wasn't Claire’s voice. It was the icy, professional tone of Miriam Cole.
"Put my wife on the phone, Miriam," Daniel demanded, trying desperately to inject some of his old authority
into his voice. "This has gone way too far. I need to speak to Claire directly, person to person. We can settle this
like mature adults without all these blood-sucking lawyers involved."
"Mr. Sterling, let me make this incredibly clear to you," Miriam replied, her voice dripping with profound
contempt. "You are under a permanent criminal protective order. This phone call itself is a technical violation, but I
am choosing to answer it once merely to deliver a message from my client. You will never speak to Claire again."
"Listen to me, you old hag!" Daniel shouted, losing his temper completely. "Tell Claire that if she goes
through with this foreclosure, I will personally ensure the divorce proceedings drag out for the next five years! I
will drag her name through the mud! I’ll tell the media she was unfaithful, that she’s mentally unstable!"
A soft, dark chuckle echoed from the other end of the line. "Mr. Sterling, you really are profoundly stupid,
aren't you? You still don't realize who you are dealing with. Look out your office window."
Daniel frowned, holding the phone to his ear as he stood up and walked over to the wide glass window
overlooking the main logistics warehouse floor.
Two sleek black luxury SUVs had just pulled into the loading bay. The doors opened, and a team of men in
immaculate dark suits stepped out, led by a tall, sharply dressed man carrying a silver briefcase.
"What is that?" Daniel whispered, his blood turning to ice.
"That is the executive enforcement team from Vance Mutual, accompanied by the county sheriff," Miriam
said smoothly. "Since you officially defaulted on your commercial loan at midnight, and failed to cure the default
within the forty-eight-hour grace period, Vance Mutual has exercised its legal right to take immediate, physical
possession of the collateral. The warehouse belongs to us now, Daniel. Your employees are currently being
instructed to log off their computers and exit the premises immediately."
Through the glass, Daniel watched in horror as the sheriff handed a stack of legal documents to his floor
manager. Security guards began placing large, neon-yellow security tape across the main warehouse bay doors. His
staff members were looking up at his office window, their faces filled with confusion and fear, before they began
grabbing their jackets and personal belongings, walking toward the exits.
"No... no, you can't do this!" Daniel screamed into the phone. "This is my company! This is my life!"
"It was your company," Miriam corrected him coldly. "Now, it's just an asset under the complete management
of the Vance Estate. Have a wonderful afternoon, Daniel."
The line went dead with a harsh click.
Daniel dropped the phone, the plastic receiver clattering uselessly against the floor. He watched as the entire
empire he had built on a foundation of arrogance, manipulation, and cruelty crumbled to dust in a matter of

minutes, all because he thought he could throw a cup of boiling coffee in the face of a woman who was infinitely
stronger than he could ever hope to be.
