Chapter 7 - Evelyn’s Grand EntranceBefore Evelyn could react, the side doors of the ballroom burst open. A dozen federal agents, led by Marcus Vance, poured into the room, their weapons drawn but kept low. The guests screamed, scattering to the edges of the room.

"Evelyn Reed," Marcus Vance announced, stepping forward with a pair of handcuffs. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit kidnapping, federal bank fraud, extortion, and tax evasion."
Evelyn drew herself up to her full height, her eyes flashing with a desperate, animalistic rage. "You have no right! This is my house! I am Evelyn Reed! You cannot arrest me on the word of a crazy woman and a disgruntled son!"
"We’re not arresting you on just their word, Evelyn," Marcus said, pulling out a tablet. He tapped the screen, and a voice began to play through the ballroom’s state-of-the-art sound system.
It was Evelyn’s voice, clear and chillingly cold: "...make sure she doesn't leave that cabin, Thomas. If she has the baby, we keep the child quiet. If Daniel finds out, everything we’ve built is gone. Do whatever you have to do."
The room gasped. Evelyn gasped, her eyes darting around the room, looking for a way out, but there was none. She was surrounded.
"Your fixer, Thomas Vance, gave us everything, Mother," Daniel said, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "The recordings, the bank transfers, the offshore accounts. It's over. You've lost."
Evelyn looked at Daniel, her face twisted in pure hatred. "I did it for you! I did it to keep the Reed legacy intact! You were weak, Daniel! You would have let her ruin us!"
"Sarah didn't ruin us," Daniel said. "You did. You destroyed this family for a title and a percentage of a company. You're going to spend the rest of your life in a concrete cell, Mother. And when you're there, I want you to remember that the only thing you succeeded in doing was making sure your granddaughter will never know your name."
Marcus stepped forward, grabbing Evelyn’s wrists and pulling them behind her back. The metallic clink of the handcuffs was loud in the silent room.
"Walk," Marcus said, leading her off the platform.
Evelyn didn't scream anymore. She walked out of the ballroom, her head held high, but the illusion of her power was shattered. The crowd parted for her, their expressions a mix of horror and disgust.
Daniel turned to Sarah, wrapping his arm around her waist. She leaned against him, her body shaking with relief.

"We did it," she whispered.
"No," Daniel said, kissing her cheek. "We’re just getting started."
