Chapter 8 - The Final HandThe aftermath of Evelyn Reed’s arrest was a media hurricane. The front pages of every major newspaper in the country carried the story of the "Resurrected Heiress" and the "Billionaire Kidnapping." The Reed Global stock price plummeted, but Daniel was prepared.

The following morning, Daniel stood at the head of the boardroom table at Reed Global headquarters. The board of directors, a group of older, wealthy men who had spent decades bowing to Evelyn’s wishes, sat in tense silence.

"Gentlemen," Daniel began, his voice calm and commanding. "I know the last twenty-four hours have been chaotic. Our stock has taken a hit, and the public is questioning the integrity of this company."

"Daniel, this is a disaster," one of the older board members said. "Your mother’s actions have ruined the Reed name. The shareholders are panicking. We need to distance ourselves from the family immediately."

"We don't need to distance ourselves from the family," Daniel countered, tapping his fingers on the table. "We need to distance ourselves from Evelyn. And we are going to do that by restructuring the board, effective immediately."

He slid a document across the table. "This is my father's original will, fully validated by the probate court this morning in light of Sarah’s return. Since Sarah is alive, her seventy percent voting shares are fully active. As the trustee of those shares, I am now the majority owner of Reed Global."

The board members stared at the document, their faces turning pale.

"Furthermore," Daniel continued, "Sarah and I are appointing a new board of directors. Every one of you who sat by and allowed my mother to systematically drain the company’s assets or ignored the warning signs of her criminal activities is being replaced. You have until five o'clock today to submit your resignations, or you will be fired for cause."

"You can't do this, Daniel!" another board member protested. "We’ve built this company!"

"My father built this company," Daniel said, his voice cold as ice. "My mother tried to steal it. And you helped her by keeping quiet. The transition begins today. If you want to keep your pensions, I suggest you sign the papers and walk out of this building quietly."

He stood up, adjusting his cuffs. "Good day, gentlemen."

He walked out of the boardroom, leaving the directors to argue amongst themselves. He felt a profound sense of lightness. The shadow that had hung over his life for two years was finally gone. He was no longer the grieving widow; he was the protector of his family’s future.
