Chapter 2 - The Shadow of the Past

The hospital room smelled of antiseptic and artificial cleanliness, a sharp contrast to the suffocating atmosphere of the Miller mansion. Elena lay in the sterile white bed, her body aching, but her mind clear and sharp. The doctors had confirmed that the baby was safe, though she was required to stay for observation. Julian sat by her side, his hand holding hers in a tight, desperate grip. He looked exhausted, haunted by what had happened.
"I can't believe he would do this," Julian whispered, staring at his shoes. "Marcus has always been difficult, but this... this is beyond anything I ever imagined."
Elena watched him closely. "Do you believe it was an accident, Julian?"
Julian looked up, his eyes wide. "Of course not! I saw him standing there. He looked like he enjoyed it. But I don't know why, Elena. We've tried to be good to him. We've given him everything."
Elena decided it was time. "Julian, before you found me, I saw something. My phone... it fell when I landed." She hesitated, then pulled the device from her bedside table, where it had been charging. "Look at this."
She unlocked the screen and played the video. Julian watched in silence, his breath catching in his throat as the image of his 'dead' sister appeared on the screen. He froze, his face draining of color. "That’s impossible," he whispered. "That’s... that’s Sarah. She’s dead. She’s been dead for three years."
"She’s not dead, Julian," Elena said, her voice steady. "And look at who she’s talking to. That’s your father."
The video continued to play. Sarah was laughing, her demeanor casual and relaxed as she discussed a trust fund transfer with Harold. The audio was crystal clear. "The Miller assets are all in place, Dad. Once Elena is out of the picture, Julian will be devastated, he’ll sign whatever you put in front of him, and we can finally liquidate the firm."
Julian sat back, his head in his hands. The betrayal wasn't just from his brother; it was from his own father. "I don't understand," he sobbed. "Why? Why would they do this to us?"
"Because they want the company, Julian," Elena replied, a cold resolve taking root in her heart. "They want the money, and they don't care who they destroy to get it. They thought getting rid of me would be the catalyst they needed to break you."
Julian stood up, his face hardening. The vulnerability was gone, replaced by a cold, calculating anger. "They think they can play us for fools? They think they can manipulate me into signing away everything I've built?" He looked at Elena, his expression fierce. "We are going to make them pay. But first, we need to know where Sarah is."
Elena reached out, taking his hand. "We have to be smart about this, Julian. We can't let them know we know. If they think we’re still in the dark, they’ll get careless. We need to gather evidence, and we need to do it without alerting them."
"I know how to play this game," Julian said, his eyes narrowing. "I’ve been naive, but I’m not stupid. I’m going to go back to the mansion, I’m going to act like a grieving husband who is just trying to make sense of his wife’s 'accident.' I’ll keep them busy."

"And I," Elena said, a small, determined smile appearing on her lips, "will start digging into the company's financial records. If they're moving money, there’s a paper trail. They can't hide it forever."
As Julian left the room, Elena felt a strange sense of liberation. The fear that had defined her existence in the Miller household was gone, replaced by the thrill of the hunt. They had tried to break her, but they had only succeeded in igniting a fire that would consume them all.
