Chapter 4 - The Hidden Truth

Elena spent her days in the hospital carefully combing through the company's public financial reports. She was a brilliant accountant, and she knew exactly where to look for irregularities. She found a series of suspicious transfers, all funneled through the same shell company Julian had identified. It was a massive, intricate web of deceit, spanning across three continents.
Julian visited her every day, bringing her news of his 'progress' at home. They communicated in whispers, careful of the walls that might have ears. He told her about the hidden safe, and she told him about the financial records. Together, they were building a case that would not only expose the corruption but also land both Marcus and Harold in prison for life.
"I got a hit on the safe," Julian whispered on the fifth day. "The private investigator says it’s a standard model, he gave me a workaround. I’m going to open it tonight."
"Be careful, Julian," Elena urged, her hand clutching his. "If they catch you, they won't hesitate. They already tried to kill me."
"I know," he said, his eyes filled with a terrifying intensity. "But they’re going to pay for that. I promise you, by the time we’re done, they’ll have nothing."
That night, Julian approached the hidden safe with the code his PI had provided. He punched it in, his heart thumping, and with a soft click, the door swung open. Inside were documents—not financial ones, but personal letters and a set of keys to a property in a remote part of the mountains. He grabbed everything, stuffing it into his bag before relocking the safe and slipping out of the office.
He was halfway to the door when the lights in the house flared to life. Marcus stood in the doorway, his arms crossed, a menacing look on his face. "Going somewhere, Julian? Or were you just checking on the family heirlooms?"
Julian didn't flinch. "I couldn't sleep. I was looking for the files I was supposed to review for the meeting."
Marcus laughed, a sound that held no mirth. "You're a bad liar, Julian. Always have been. You’ve been acting weird since the accident. And we know you’ve been communicating with someone outside."
Marcus stepped forward, his size imposing. "I don't know what you think you found, but you’re making a mistake. You’re playing with things you don't understand."
"I understand perfectly," Julian countered, his voice steady. "I understand that you and Dad have been stealing from the firm, and I understand that Sarah is alive."
Marcus’s eyes widened, just for a second, before he masked it with a sneer. "Sarah is dead, Julian. You’re delusional."
"I have the video, Marcus," Julian lied, though he knew he didn't need to show it yet. "I know everything."
Marcus stared at him for a long moment, then slowly reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, black object. It was a remote. "You think you’re so smart? You think you can take us down? You have no idea what you’re dealing with."

Before Julian could react, Marcus pressed a button. A loud alarm started blaring through the house, and the security doors locked automatically, sealing them inside. "We’re going to settle this, brother. Tonight."
Julian looked at the locked door, then back at his brother. He realized he had walked into a trap, but he also knew that this was the moment he had been preparing for. He reached into his own pocket and pulled out his phone—his own version of a remote. He hadn't been idle either. He had hacked the house’s security system weeks ago, a secret insurance policy he hadn't told anyone about—not even Elena. The game had just shifted, and now it was his turn to lead.
