Chapter 14 - I WENT BACK TO THE DOCK WHERE EVERYTHING STARTED

A year after the lake, I returned alone.

Sunrise.

No reporters.

No police.

No Lauren.

Just me.

The dock looked smaller.

That's what trauma does.

Makes places enormous in memory.

The resort had mounted a plaque thanking Ben Harris and the guests who helped rescue Mom.

My name was there too.

I hated seeing it.

Because it made me look heroic.

I was not.

I was a son who ran.

Ben was the stranger who jumped without obligation.

I touched the railing.

Solid.

Then footsteps behind me.

Mom.

In her wheelchair.

“You followed me.”

“Yes.”

“Who drove?”

“Ben.”

Of course.

Ben had become a family friend.

Maybe more to Mom, though neither admitted anything.

He stood far back pretending to study ducks.

Mom rolled beside me.

“Push me closer.”

My body locked.

“No.”

“Andrew.”

“No.”

“There’s a railing.”

“I don't care.”

She looked at me.

“That fear belongs to you now.”

The truth hurt.

Mom had done therapy.

I had not.

I had convinced myself I was fine because I wasn't the one in the wheelchair.

But every nightmare.

Every panic when brakes clicked.

Every refusal to let Mom near water.

Trauma.

Mine too.

She touched my hand.

“You jumped in for me.”

“Of course.”

“Now let me live for me.”

I cried.

Quietly.

Then I pushed her chair.

Slowly.

Toward the railing.

Not the edge.

Not danger.

Just enough.

Mom looked across the water.

“Beautiful.”

I stood behind her.

Hands on the grips.

Not control.

May you like

Support.

There is a difference.
