Chapter 2 - Punishment Born of IgnoranceI forcefully pushed Rex out into the backyard, thrusting him into the bitter cold and pouring rain of the late afternoon, and slammed the heavy door shut. The sound of the deadbolt clicking into place felt like a sharp blade cutting off years of companionship.

Sara walked up behind me, whispering softly:

"He's freezing out there... and the rain is getting worse."

"He’s dangerous," I snapped, my voice harsh to mask my own trembling. "He almost hurt you and the baby. I cannot risk it."

To emphasize my finality, I picked up his food and water bowls and locked them in the pantry. I convinced myself that this isolation was a necessary, just punishment for an animal that had lost its mind. At that exact moment, I genuinely believed I was being a responsible husband and father.

That night, a severe storm rolled in. The wind howled through the window panes, and rain lashed violently against the glass. I lay awake in bed, unable to find a single moment of peace. Downstairs, the faint, repetitive sound of Rex’s claws scratching against the wooden back door echoed through the house. In the past, that familiar sound brought comfort—a reminder that our silent guardian was awake. Tonight, it only fueled my irritation and guilt.

One day bled into the second.

Eventually, Rex stopped scratching. He just sat motionless in the far corner of the yard, letting the cold rain drench his fur. Looking through the second-floor window, his solitary silhouette looked utterly heartbroken. But I noticed a peculiar detail: he wasn't staring at the back door waiting to be let in. Instead, his eyes were locked permanently onto the window of the nursery.

It was that unyielding, sorrowful gaze that finally cracked my stubborn resolve. The fragmented memories of that chaotic afternoon began to replay in my head with terrifying clarity.

Rex had never bared his teeth at Sara.

He never made a move to bite her.

His target, from the very beginning, had been the closet.

The thought wouldn't leave me alone. By the morning of the third day, the overwhelming weight of suspicion and guilt became too heavy to bear.
