Chapter 3 - The Hidden TerrorI walked up to the nursery alone, opened the door, and slowly approached the closet. The room still smelled of fresh paint, pine wood, and new baby fabric. I knelt down in the messy closet floor and began systematically moving the remaining clothes aside. At first, there was nothing. Just empty space.

But as I reached into the deepest, darkest corner of the built-in wardrobe, my fingers brushed against something abnormal.

There was a slight gap in the back wall. It was nearly invisible under normal lighting, but the plywood backing had slightly warped and splintered inward, as if some persistent force had been pushing against it from the inside cavity of the wall. A sudden, icy chill ran straight down my spine.

Using a nearby screwdriver, I pried the damaged wooden panel away. The moment the board popped open, my heart stopped, and the air trapped itself in my throat.

Inside the dark, insulated hollow of the wall, something massive was slowly undulating.

It was a snake. A thick, pitch-black, heavily coiled rat snake—massive in size—resting comfortably in the warmth of the wall right behind my child's crib. And worse, tucked neatly within its dark coils was a large clutch of leathery eggs, incubated perfectly by the house's internal heating.

The serpent didn't strike immediately. It slowly elevated its triangular head, its black, glassy eyes locking onto mine as its forked tongue flicked in and out, tasting the sudden rush of fresh air.

In that singular, horrifying second, my entire world view shattered. I understood everything.

Rex had smelled it. Long before we had any inkling of danger, his acute predatory instincts had warned him of a lethal threat nesting right where my newborn son was supposed to sleep. He hadn't gone crazy. He hadn't attacked Sara. He had thrown himself into the closet to tear down the barrier and destroy the threat before it could harm his family. He held the baby clothes in his mouth because they were blocking his path to the nest.

He had been trying to save us with every ounce of his being. And I... I had cast him out into the freezing rain, punishing him for his finest hour of heroism.
