Chapter 4 - The Grandfather Who Paid for the Search

Richard Mercer had spent millions searching for Claire.

At least that was what everyone believed.

The ledgers from St. Catherine’s told a different story.

Money from the Claire Dawson Recovery Foundation flowed through consulting firms, medical nonprofits and private investigators.

Then some of it returned to companies controlled by Martin Vale.

The search had been a machine.

It generated sympathy, tax benefits and business connections.

And somebody had profited from keeping Claire missing.

Adrian stood in his father’s old study on Christmas afternoon.

A portrait of Richard hung above the fireplace.

Noah took it down.

Adrian looked at him.

“What are you doing?”

“I’m tired of him watching.”

They placed the portrait face-first against the wall.

Claire entered carrying her red mittens.

“Who’s that?”

“Your grandfather.”

“Was he nice?”

Adrian could have lied.

Instead he said, “I thought he was.”

Claire nodded.

“Sometimes people fool you.”

Both brothers stared at her.

“What?”

“Aunt Denise fooled neighbors.”

Noah sat beside her.

“How?”

“She smiled when people came.”

That simple sentence hurt more than the ledgers.

The FBI reopened financial records from the years after Claire disappeared.

Richard had authorized payments to St. Catherine’s.

One memo read:

CONTINUED RESIDENTIAL CARE — E.D.

Emily Dawson.

Adrian gripped the desk.

“She was alive.”

Noah whispered, “Dad institutionalized her.”

The facility had closed two years earlier after bankruptcy.

Former employees were located.

One nurse remembered Emily.

“She wasn’t mentally ill,” the nurse said during a video interview. “She kept insisting her daughter had been kidnapped.”

“Why was she held?”

“Court order.”

“Signed by whom?”

The nurse hesitated.

“Judge Malcolm Reed.”

Judge Reed had been Richard Mercer’s college roommate.

Emily escaped after nine months.

Then vanished.

A second nurse remembered a little girl visiting the facility once.

Claire.

Adrian looked at his daughter.

“Do you remember a hospital?”

Claire shook her head.

“A lady singing?”

She went still.

“What song?”

“Silent Night.”

Claire’s eyes filled.

“Mommy.”

Adrian moved closer.

“You remember?”

“Aunt Denise took me somewhere. Mommy hugged me. Then Aunt Denise got mad.”

“What happened?”

Claire pressed her hands over her ears.

Dr. Bell immediately stopped the conversation.

“That’s enough.”

Adrian backed away.

“I’m sorry.”

Claire looked at him.

“You’re not mad?”

“No.”

“I didn’t answer.”

“You don’t owe me answers that hurt you.”

She slowly lowered her hands.

That night, while snow covered the mansion lawn, Claire helped Rosa bake gingerbread.

Adrian watched from the doorway.

Noah joined him.

“She looks like Emily.”

“I know.”

“Same serious face when she’s concentrating.”

Adrian smiled.

Then his phone rang.

Detective Quinn.

They had found Denise.

She had been arrested at a motel near Milwaukee.

In her car was the red box.

Inside were forged birth certificates, cash, photographs and letters.

One letter was from Richard Mercer.

KEEP THE GIRL OUT OF ADRIAN’S REACH UNTIL THE TRUST VESTS.

Adrian read it twice.

“What trust?”

Nobody knew.

Then police found another letter.

It was addressed to Denise.

If Emily resurfaces, contact Martin. Do not contact me.

Signed R.M.

Claire entered.

Adrian hid the paper.

She looked at him.

“You have your sad face.”

“I’m okay.”

“That’s what grown-ups say when they’re not.”

He laughed weakly.

“You’re getting difficult.”

“I’m seven.”

“Terrifying age.”

She held out a crooked gingerbread man.

“This one is you.”

“Why is one leg shorter?”

“It broke.”

“Comforting.”

She smiled.

Then Rosa came running from the kitchen.

“Mr. Mercer.”

“What?”

“There’s someone at the gate.”

Security cameras showed a woman standing in the snow.

Thin.

Long brown hair streaked with gray.

She held no bag.

No weapon.

Only a faded photograph.

Adrian stared at the monitor.

Noah whispered, “Emily.”

Claire looked at the screen.

May you like

Her gingerbread man fell from her hand.

“Mommy?”
