Chapter 6 - The Lodge Beyond the Snow

Police told Adrian not to go.

He went anyway.

Not alone.

Detectives reached the Mercer lodge first, followed by Adrian, Noah and Emily. Claire remained with Rosa and Dr. Bell under armed protection.

The lodge sat beyond frozen woods in Wisconsin, decorated exactly as Richard Mercer had liked it: white lights, evergreen wreaths and a massive tree visible through the windows.

Adrian hated the sight.

His childhood Christmases had happened there.

Now every memory felt contaminated.

Inside, police found Rebecca.

She was tied to a chair.

Alive.

Adrian stopped.

“Rebecca?”

She looked at him and began sobbing.

“I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“For everything.”

She admitted paying Denise.

But not to keep Claire hidden.

“To keep her alive.”

Adrian stared.

Rebecca claimed Martin approached her eighteen months earlier with proof Claire was alive. He threatened to kill the child if Rebecca told Adrian.

“So you paid him?”

“I paid Denise directly. She said she could keep Claire away from Martin.”

Emily stepped forward.

“And you never called police?”

Rebecca looked at her.

“I didn’t know who to trust.”

“You could have trusted her father.”

“His father created this.”

“Richard was dead.”

“His network wasn’t.”

Adrian wanted to hate Rebecca cleanly.

The truth refused to cooperate.

She had lied.

She had hidden Claire’s existence.

But she might also have prevented something worse.

Police searched the lodge.

In Richard’s locked wine cellar they discovered a hidden office.

Rows of files.

Photographs.

Trust documents.

One file bore Claire’s name.

Adrian opened it.

His daughter was beneficiary of a controlling trust created by Emily’s grandfather, a reclusive industrialist named Samuel Dawson.

The fortune was enormous.

Claire would inherit at age ten.

Unless she was declared legally dead.

Then the assets transferred to a charitable foundation.

The Mercer-Dawson Children’s Fund.

Richard Mercer had controlled that foundation.

Martin Vale controlled it now.

Noah whispered, “There it is.”

The kidnapping had never been about Adrian’s money.

It was about Claire’s.

Emily sank into a chair.

“My grandfather told me there was a trust, but I thought it had been dissolved.”

“No,” Adrian said. “They were waiting.”

Three more years.

If Claire remained missing until ten, Martin could seek a death declaration and seize control.

Rebecca had learned enough to become dangerous.

That explained why she was tied in the lodge.

But not who tied her.

Detective Quinn found tire tracks.

Martin’s SUV.

An alert went out.

Then Noah discovered a small room behind the office.

Children’s toys.

A bed.

A wall covered with height marks.

Claire’s name appeared beside dates from four years earlier.

Emily touched the wall.

“She was here.”

Adrian stared at a mark showing Claire at age four.

Richard had brought his granddaughter to the family lodge while publicly begging America to find her.

Noah punched the wall.

Adrian did not stop him.

Then a floorboard creaked upstairs.

Police raised weapons.

A man emerged with both hands up.

Martin Vale.

He had not escaped.

He had been hiding.

“You don’t understand,” he said.

Adrian nearly crossed the room.

Quinn stopped him.

Martin smiled.

“Your father didn’t kidnap Claire.”

“Liar.”

“He paid to hide her after the kidnapping.”

“Why?”

“Because the person who took her threatened to expose something worse.”

Emily stared.

“What could be worse than stealing a child?”

Martin looked toward her.

“Ask Noah.”

Everyone turned.

Noah’s face changed.

Adrian whispered, “What?”

Martin laughed.

“Tell him, Noah.”

Noah backed away.

Adrian felt the room tilt.

“Tell me what?”

Noah closed his eyes.

“I was there the night Claire disappeared.”

Adrian stared at his brother.

“You told police you were in New York.”

“I lied.”

“Why?”

“Dad made me.”

Emily whispered, “What did you see?”

Noah looked at Claire’s height marks on the wall.

Then he said, “I saw who carried her out of the house.”

Adrian’s voice became barely audible.

“Who?”

May you like

Noah looked directly at Emily.

“You did.”
