Chapter 16 - Whispers Across the Atlantic

As the new year of 2027 dawned bright and crisp across the coastline, the corporate restructuring of Titan Security Solutions was officially finalized. Our new line of encrypted residential security infrastructure was slated for a major international unveiling in London and Berlin by early spring.
During a routine security audit of our international communications routing, our lead network architect flagged an unusual metadata ping originating from an encrypted server node in Mayfair, London—the exact neighborhood where Daniel’s former mistress, Chloe, resided before the scandal broke.
Uncle Robert brought the flagged anomaly into my office on a Tuesday morning, laying a printed packet of encrypted server logs across my desk.
“Take a look at this, Claire,” Robert said, adjusting his glasses. “Our automated threat-detection algorithms intercepted an encrypted data burst attempting to query the administrative access protocols of our European holding accounts.”
I scanned the technical readouts, my eyebrows rising slightly in professional curiosity. “Who is initiating the handshake protocol?”
“That’s the fascinating part,” Robert replied grimly. “The cryptographic signature doesn't belong to Chloe, and it doesn't belong to any known corporate competitor. The digital certificate used to encrypt the query was issued under an inactive corporate shell entity that hasn't been active since 2021—an entity originally registered under Patricia Sterling’s maiden name.”
I leaned back in my ergonomic leather chair, tapping my pen lightly against the mahogany desktop. “Patricia’s maiden name? But Patricia is serving a twenty-five-year federal sentence in a maximum-security facility three states away. She has zero access to external communications or encrypted cryptographic keys.”
“Unless someone on the outside was holding the master private key all along,” Robert noted, his voice dropping into a serious, tactical tone. “Someone who wasn't named in the initial indictments because we didn't have proof of their involvement during the trial.”
I stared at the technical logs, a sudden, sharp wave of intuition washing over me. During our initial investigation into Daniel and Patricia’s financial network, there had always been persistent rumors of a silent senior partner—an anonymous silent investor who provided the initial seed capital for Titan Security Solutions back when Daniel was still working out of his garage. Daniel always claimed it was an eccentric family trust fund. But we never found the paper trail.

“Run a deep recursive trace on the originating IP address of that London handshake,” I instructed firmly, locking my gaze onto Robert. “Find out who is still trying to access those dormant accounts.”
“Already on it,” Robert smiled grimly. “I’ve deployed our top cyber-forensics team. Whatever secrets Daniel and Patricia left buried across the Atlantic, we’re about to drag every single one of them out into the light.”
