Chapter 5 - Shadows at the Reception

While the news of the shattered wedding tore through social media, the aftermath at the Millbrook Inn was chaotic. The grand reception hall, decorated with hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of orchids and white lilies, had turned into a battleground of whispered rumors and quick exits.
In the private VIP lounge upstairs, Eleanor Bennett paced back and forth across the Persian rug, her glass of whiskey trembling in her hand. Arthur Bennett sat in a high-backed leather chair, breathing heavily, his face dangerously pale.
Maverick stood near the balcony, his head in his hands. "How could she do this?" he muttered over and over. "She ruined everything!"
"Shut up, Maverick!" Eleanor snapped, slamming her glass onto the side table. "You ruined everything with your pathetic lack of self-control! Penelope Cross? Of all the women in New York, you had to touch the maid of honor on your wedding day?"
"She came to me!" Maverick yelled back, turning around with bloodshot eyes. "She told me Amy was planning to alter the marriage contract! She told me Amy didn't trust us!"
Arthur raised his hand, his voice raspy. "It doesn't matter who started it. What matters is the Sterling patents. Amy hasn't signed the prenuptial agreement annex yet. Without her signature, we can't merge Sterling Design with Bennett Financial."
"The loan from the East Coast Consortium is due in thirty days," Eleanor said through gritted teeth, her eyes wide with anxiety. "If we don't present those green patents as collateral, they will initiate an emergency audit of our accounts. They'll find the three hundred million dollar deficit in the offshore accounts!"
Maverick froze. "Deficit? What deficit? Dad, what is she talking about?"
Arthur didn't answer. He stared blankly at the floor.
"Your father made some high-risk investments in overseas real estate two years ago, Maverick," Eleanor revealed coldly. "We needed Amy's father's patents to secure the liquidity to cover it up. The marriage was supposed to save this family from prison!"
Meanwhile, across Manhattan, in an exclusive penthouse suite overlooking Central Park, Amy stood in front of a floor-to-ceiling mirror. She had finally taken off the heavy wedding dress and changed into a sleek, tailored navy blue blazer suit.
Julian sat at the dining table, a high-end laptop open in front of him, his fingers flying across the keyboard.
"I just pulled up the registration records for the Sterling patents," Julian said without looking up. "Your father locked them behind a triple-encrypted trust structure before he passed away. You are the sole executor, but there was a clause."
Amy walked over to the table, leaning over his shoulder. "What clause?"
"Clause 14-B," Julian highlighted the text on the screen. "If you had married Maverick today, full administrative voting rights over the trust would have automatically defaulted to your legal spouse after thirty days, unless explicitly revoked prior to marriage."
Amy felt a chill run down her spine. "They were going to let the thirty days pass without telling me. They would have stolen the rights right out from under me."
"Precisely," Julian said, turning his head to look at her. They were standing mere inches apart, and Amy could smell the subtle scent of sandalwood and expensive cedar from his cologne. "Maverick wasn't just cheating on you, Amy. He was stalling you."
"Why Penelope?" Amy asked, genuine confusion in her eyes. "Why did she help them?"
Julian pressed a button on his laptop, pulling up a series of financial transactions. "Penelope's family firm went bankrupt six months ago. Take a look at these wire transfers. Two hundred thousand dollars deposited into an offshore account in Penelope's name, originating from a shell company registered to Bennett Financial."
Amy gasped. "They bought her."
"They paid her to keep tabs on you, to manipulate your decisions, and ultimately, to make sure you didn't look too closely at the wedding contract," Julian explained coldly. "Her stepping into Room 237 today wasn't an accident, Amy. Penelope got greedy. She thought if she seduced Maverick, she could secure a permanent place in the Bennett family instead of just taking a payout."
Amy gripped the edge of the mahogany table, her knuckles turning white. The hurt was gone now, replaced by an icy, unstoppable fury.

"They underestimated me," Amy said softly.
"They underestimated both of us," Julian corrected, standing up and looking down at her with a fierce, magnetic intensity. "I've been looking for a reason to dismantle my father's corrupt regime for five years. Together, Amy... we can tear Bennett Financial down to the ground."
