Chapter 12 - Four Sons on Their Knees: The Hospital Room Where the Millionaires Cried Like Children

For seven agonizing hours, the private surgical wing of St. Jude’s Medical Center was locked down under heavy armed guard.

Arthur Sterling and his co-conspirators had been arrested at the gala, their lives and fortunes permanently dismantled by Julian’s legal empire. But inside the sterile hospital waiting room, none of that wealth or power mattered.

The four Cavanaugh brothers sat in a tight row on the vinyl chairs, our tuxedo shirts stained with Eleanor’s blood.

Mason was curled into a ball, his forehead pressed against his knees, weeping silently. Ethan had his head in his hands, his shoulders shaking uncontrollably. Toby refused to leave my lap, his small hands clutching the blood-stained sleeve of my jacket, whispering her name over and over like a broken prayer.

I sat staring at the red surgical light above the double doors, feeling completely hollow. We had finally found someone who made Fairhaven feel like a home, someone who loved us despite our brokenness, and the world was trying to take her away.

Julian sat in the corner of the waiting room, his head bowed, his hands clasped so tightly his knuckles were white. The billionaire who controlled half the state looked completely destroyed.

At 5:30 AM, the surgical doors swung open.

The chief trauma surgeon walked out, pulling down his mask. He looked exhausted, his scrubs flecked with sweat.

All five of us sprang to our feet simultaneously.

“Doctor?” Julian asked, his voice trembling—a sound none of his sons had ever heard before.

The surgeon let out a long breath and offered a faint, reassuring smile. “The bullet missed her femoral artery by less than two millimeters. We managed to repair the internal lacerations and stop the hemorrhage. She is stable, and she is going to survive.”

Ethan collapsed back into his chair, sobbing with overwhelming relief. Mason covered his face with his hands, letting out a ragged gasp.

I fell to my knees right there in the hospital corridor, pulling Toby into my chest, tears streaming down my face.

We hadn't lost her.
