Chapter 7 - Midnight at the Bennett Center

Rachel did not obey the note.
She also did not tell the kidnappers that.
Detective Collins fitted her with a transmitter while Thomas arranged access to Hawthorne Academy.
Sam stood in the kitchen, furious.
“They want me. I should go.”
“No.”
“Lily got taken because of me.”
“No. Lily got taken because adults committed crimes.”
“You always say adults.”
“Because you are nine.”
“I can help.”
Rachel knelt.
“You already have.”
Sam’s eyes filled.
“She gave me her cookie.”
“I know.”
“I want her back.”
“So do I.”
At eleven fifty-eight, Rachel entered the Bennett Center carrying Sam’s old duffel bag.
It was empty.
Christmas lights from the courtyard shone through the glass lobby.
A man stepped from the auditorium.
Harold Pike.
Rachel’s stomach turned.
“You.”
Harold smiled nervously. “Bag.”
“Where’s Lily?”
“Upstairs.”
“You show me.”
Another figure appeared.
Marlene Pike.
She looked exhausted, frightened, and angry.
“This was never supposed to get this big.”
Rachel stared at her.
“You kept my son hungry for years.”
“We kept him alive.”
“You call that living?”
Harold snapped, “Enough.”
A voice came through the auditorium speakers.
“Bring Rachel inside.”
William Bennett appeared on the projection screen.
Older than the photograph, but unmistakable.
Thomas’s supposedly dead father.
Rachel walked into the auditorium.
Lily sat in the front row beside a woman Rachel did not recognize. She was frightened but conscious.
“Mom!”
Rachel took one step.
Harold blocked her.
William’s image filled the screen.
“You were always inconvenient, Rachel.”
“You stole my child.”
“I preserved an asset.”
Rachel’s face twisted with disgust.
“He is a person.”
“People with valuable bloodlines become assets whether they like it or not.”
Behind the building, police teams moved into position.
Rachel needed time.
“Why Lily?”
“Because Sam listens when Lily is threatened.”
“What do you want?”
“Thomas will transfer his voting shares into a trust controlled by me.”
Rachel laughed once.
“You’ve been dead six years.”
“Death is remarkably useful.”
The woman beside Lily suddenly stood.
She shoved Lily toward the aisle.
“Run.”
Chaos erupted.
The woman was Noelle.
She had infiltrated William’s group earlier that evening.
Harold grabbed for Lily.
Rachel slammed into his arm and pulled Lily behind her.
Police flooded the auditorium.
Marlene dropped to the floor.
Harold ran toward a side exit and was tackled by officers.
William’s video feed disappeared.
He had never been in the building.
Thomas entered moments later and hugged Lily.
Sam, waiting in a police vehicle, was brought inside only after the scene was secure.
Lily ran to him.
“You owe me a cookie.”
Sam hugged her awkwardly.
“Fine.”
“Two.”
“You’re exploiting trauma.”
Nobody knew where he had learned that phrase.
Rachel laughed and cried at once.
Noelle approached.
“I’m sorry.”
Rachel looked at her.
“For which part?”
“Using Sam to force the truth into daylight.”
“You don’t get to make decisions about my children.”
“I know.”
It was not forgiveness.
But it was a beginning.
Police searched the Bennett Center offices.
Behind a false wall in the donor archive, they found boxes of records.
Birth certificates.
Guardianship papers.
Payments.
Photographs.
And letters from mothers who had spent years asking where their children had gone.
One file was labeled SAMUEL MERCER.
Inside was a document Rachel had never seen.
It purported to surrender all parental rights.
Her signature looked perfect.
But the date was three days after she had left the hospital.
Rachel had been in another state by then.
“Forgery,” she whispered.
Thomas turned another page.
A handwritten instruction read:
KEEP BOY OUTSIDE FORMAL SYSTEM UNTIL W.B. AUTHORIZES RELEASE.
Thomas looked sick.
Sam asked, “What does that mean?”
Rachel answered carefully.
“It means what happened to you was planned.”
“By your family?” Sam asked Thomas.
Thomas nodded.
“Yes.”
Sam stared at him.
“That’s messed up.”
“Yes.”
Detective Collins entered carrying another folder.
“We found something else.”
She placed it on the table.
The label read LILY MERCER.
Rachel stopped breathing.
“Why does William have a file on my daughter?”
Collins opened it.
Inside were photographs beginning the day Lily was born.
School records.
Medical records.
A copy of Rachel’s will.
And one sentence typed across the final page.
SECOND CHILD CONFIRMED. PATERNITY UNKNOWN TO MOTHER.
Rachel stared at the words.
Thomas whispered, “Rachel…”
She looked at him.
Lily’s father had supposedly been Rachel’s former husband, Michael Mercer, who died when Lily was two.
May you like
Rachel suddenly understood why William had taken Lily.
It might never have been only about Sam.
