Chapter 8 - The Secret Hidden in Lily’s Snow Globe

Rachel refused to discuss Lily’s paternity in front of the children.
That night, Sam and Lily slept in the same room because neither wanted to be alone.
Rachel sat downstairs with Thomas and June.
“Michael was Lily’s father.”
June looked uneasy.
Rachel noticed.
“Mom?”
June closed her eyes.
“What?”
“There’s something I should have told you.”
Rachel stood.
“No.”
“Rachel—”
“No more Christmas confessions.”
June began crying.
After Rachel left Thomas, she dated Michael Mercer. They married quickly. What Rachel never knew was that Michael had once worked security for the Bennett family.
Thomas stared.
“I knew him.”
Rachel turned.
“What?”
“He was one of my father’s drivers.”
The room went silent.
June explained that Michael approached her before his death and left a sealed envelope in case anything happened to him.
“You had this for five years?”
“He made me promise not to give it to you unless the Bennetts came after Lily.”
Rachel could barely contain her anger.
June retrieved the envelope from a safe.
Inside was a letter.
Rachel,
If you are reading this, William Bennett has found Lily.
I loved her as my daughter. But I am not her biological father.
Thomas Bennett is.
Rachel dropped the page.
“That’s impossible.”
Thomas looked equally stunned.
They reconstructed the timeline.
Nine years earlier, Rachel had given birth to Sam. She and Thomas separated under pressure from his family. Almost two years later, they briefly reunited one night when Thomas came to apologize.
Weeks afterward, Rachel began dating Michael.
She discovered the pregnancy later and assumed Michael was the father because a clinic had dated the pregnancy incorrectly.
Michael apparently learned the truth after Lily was born.
He never told Rachel.
Thomas whispered, “Lily is my daughter?”
Rachel glared at him.
“We test. We do not tell her anything until we know.”
The DNA test was expedited.
While they waited, police arrested Marlene Pike. Harold began cooperating.
He admitted William paid them monthly to keep Sam off official records.
“Margaret knew?” Rachel asked.
“Some of it.”
“How much?”
“She knew he was with us. She sent money for food and school.”
Rachel’s voice turned cold.
“And you spent it.”
Harold looked down.
Marlene had used much of the money to pay debts.
William did not care as long as Sam remained alive and invisible.
That distinction made Rachel furious.
At home, Sam began testing boundaries.
He left socks on the floor.
He complained about vegetables.
He argued with Lily over television.
Rachel treasured every ordinary problem.
One evening, he asked, “If the court says I can stay, do I have to call you Mom?”
“No.”
“What do I call you?”
“Rachel works.”
“That’s weird.”
“You can choose.”
He considered it.
“Can I just not decide yet?”
“Yes.”
He nodded, relieved.
Lily entered carrying a snow globe Margaret had once mailed anonymously.
Inside was a miniature Bennett Center surrounded by fake snow.
“It stopped playing music.”
Thomas turned it over.
The base had been opened before.
Inside they found a microSD card.
Police examined it.
The card contained video recorded by Michael before his death.
Michael appeared on screen inside William’s private office.
“If anyone sees this, William Bennett is trafficking identities through charitable adoption programs.”
Rachel covered her mouth.
Michael continued.
“He knows Thomas has two children with Rachel Mercer. He intends to use both children to control Thomas’s inheritance.”
Thomas whispered, “Two.”
The recording was made months before Michael died.
The DNA result arrived the next morning.
Thomas was Lily’s biological father.
Probability: 99.998 percent.
Rachel sat alone with the paper for a long time.
Then Sam came downstairs.
“You okay?”
“No.”
He nodded.
“Adults say that when they’re finally telling the truth.”
Rachel looked at him.
Despite everything, she smiled.
Later, she and Thomas told Lily in simple terms that a test showed Thomas was her biological father, while Michael remained the father who had raised and loved her.
Lily stared at Thomas.
“So Sam is my full brother?”
“Yes,” Rachel said.
Lily looked delighted.
Sam looked horrified.
“She’s going to use this against me forever.”
“Absolutely,” Lily said.
The warmth lasted until Detective Collins called.
Michael Mercer’s fatal car accident had been reopened.
Brake failure.
Same mechanic connected to William Bennett’s companies.
Rachel’s knees weakened.
Michael had not simply died.
May you like
He had been silenced.
And the mechanic had just been found alive in a motel outside Chicago.
