Chapter 19 - The Morning Sun Over Washington

By noon the following day, the United States was experiencing the largest political and judicial earthquake in its modern history.

The Project Chronos files, uploaded simultaneously to every major news outlet and federal law enforcement database, exposed over seventy corrupt officials across five states. Within twenty-four hours, the United States Attorney General announced the arrest of Senator Donald Sterling, three federal appellate judges, fourteen high-ranking police commanders, and thirty-five executives of private prison corporations.

Senator Donald Sterling was wheeled out of his estate in handcuffs, his face bruised and swollen, greeted by a mob of over five thousand furious citizens demanding life imprisonment for treason.

Meanwhile, at the federal courthouse in Washington D.C., a special emergency plenary session of the United States Court of Appeals was convened.

The courtroom was filled to the brim with over four hundred journalists, international observers, and civil rights advocates. Cameras were permitted inside the chamber by special order of the Chief Justice.

At the center of the well stood Marcus Hale, dressed in an immaculate dark navy three-piece suit. Standing beside him was Ethan Cole, wearing a crisp white dress shirt under his beloved, iconic blue denim jacket.

The Chief Justice of the United States slammed his gavel down, bringing the thunderous room to absolute silence.

"In the matter of *Marcus Daniel Hale v. The State*," the Chief Justice read, his voice resonating through the chamber. "Having reviewed the irrefutable evidence preserved by Abigail Cole, and having received the formal confession of former Commander Victor Kane, this court finds that Mr. Hale was the victim of a malicious, corrupt, and criminal conspiracy orchestrated at the highest levels of government."

The Chief Justice looked down from the bench, his eyes filled with profound gravity and respect.

"Marcus Daniel Hale, your conviction is hereby vacated with full exoneration. You are declared innocent of all charges, with the full restoration of all civil liberties, veteran honors, and legal standing. Furthermore, this court recommends that the Department of Justice award full restitution for the six years of wrongful incarceration endured."

The courtroom erupted into a standing ovation.

Reporters clapped, spectators cheered, and even the federal marshals lined along the walls broke their stoic discipline to applaud.

Marcus closed his eyes, taking a deep, shuddering breath. For six years, he had been a numbered ghost waiting to be executed. Today, he was a free man whose name had been cleansed in the highest court of the land.

Marcus turned to Ethan.

Ethan looked up at him, a radiant, beautiful smile lighting up the boy’s face for the first time since this nightmare had begun.

"We did it, Marcus," Ethan said softly.

Marcus knelt down on one knee so he was eye-level with the boy. "No, Ethan. You did it. You walked toward the gun when everyone else ran away."
