Chapter 9 - The Forest of Shadows

The mountain forest was a maze of towering hemlocks, jagged boulders, and roaring rain. Marcus led the group through the pitch-black undergrowth, moving with the quiet precision of a combat tracker. He held Ethan by the hand, while Diane and Sarah followed closely behind, stepping carefully in their footsteps to avoid leaving deep tracks in the mud.

Behind them, flashlights swept through the mist as the mercenaries fanned out into a search line.

"Spread out ten paces!" a voice barked in the distance. "Kill Hale and the journalist! Bring the boy back alive! The Senator wants him secured!"

Marcus stopped behind the trunk of a massive fallen pine. He knelt down, pulling Ethan, Diane, and Sarah close.

"They're trained trackers," Marcus whispered, the rain dripping from his jaw. "In these woods, in the dark, they have night vision. We can't outrun them on foot to the old mill. It's still three miles up the ridge."

"What do we do?" Sarah asked, her teeth chattering from the freezing cold.

Marcus looked at Ethan. "Ethan, remember when you were six, and we used to play hide-and-seek behind your grandfather’s workshop?"

Ethan nodded. "You taught me how to walk on the roots so I wouldn't snap twigs."

"I need you to lead Diane and Sarah up the dry creek bed," Marcus said, pointing toward a rocky ravine fifty yards to the west. "The creek bed is lined with shale. It won't leave footprints. Follow it all the way up to the old water wheel. There's a storm cellar under the mill floorboards. Hide there and lock it from the inside."

Ethan's eyes widened. "What about you?"

"I'm going to lead them the other way," Marcus said, checking the remaining rounds in his submachine gun magazine. "They want me. I'll make sure they don't look in the creek."

Ethan grabbed Marcus's sleeve. "No. Marcus, you promised. We stay together."

Marcus reached out, placing his warm, calloused hand against Ethan's wet cheek. "Ethan, six years ago I failed to protect your mother. I was ten seconds too late to stop Kane. I've had to live with that every second in that concrete cell. I am not letting anything happen to you tonight. You are Abigail's legacy. Now take Diane and go."

Ethan looked into Marcus's eyes, seeing the unwavering devotion of a man who would gladly trade his life for him. Ethan swallowed hard, wiped the rain from his eyes, and nodded.

"I won't let you down, Marcus," Ethan said.

"I know you won't. Go."

Ethan turned to Diane and Sarah. "Follow me. Step only where I step."

As Ethan led the two women quietly into the shadows of the shale ravine, Marcus took a deep breath. He stood up, racked the bolt of his weapon, and stepped deliberately out into a clearing illuminated by the sweeping beams of the mercenary flashlights.

Marcus fired a short, deliberate burst into the canopy above the trackers' heads.

"Hey!" Marcus roared, his voice echoing across the mountain valley like thunder. "Looking for me, you cowards?"

Instantly, all four flashlight beams snapped onto Marcus’s position.

"There he is! Light him up!"

Rifle fire ripped through the trees as Marcus turned and sprinted toward the rocky cliffs of Blackwood Ridge, drawing the hunters completely away from the boy.
