Chapter 11 - The Digital Siege

Sparks showered from the overhead electrical conduit as Marcus’s primary server rack overheated under the crushing weight of the incoming denial-of-service attack. The studio monitors flickered from a clear high-definition video feed to a chaotic mosaic of digital static and scrolling error code.

“They’re routing a military-grade firewall breach through the state telecommunications trunk!” Marcus yelled, his fingers flying across the dual keyboards with desperate speed as he tried to isolate the infected proxy nodes. “If they override our master gateway, the entire broadcast stream will be wiped clean within forty seconds!”

Emily jumped out of her chair, rushing to the secondary diagnostic console. “Mom, look at the server logs! It’s not just state cyber-units. The attack vectors are originating from three separate IP addresses linked directly to the State Supreme Court’s internal network!”

“They’re trying to protect their own benches,” I said, my voice ice-cold as I watched the digital meter drop from ninety percent signal strength down to forty. “They know that once Arthur’s journal is archived publicly, every ruling they’ve handed down in corporate trust cases over the past decade becomes legally contestable.”

“Can you hold the gateway, Marcus?” I asked, leaning over the mixing desk.

“I’m trying!” Marcus shouted, sweat beading on his forehead as he slammed a heavy manual bypass switch. “I’m routing our data packets through an offshore satellite relay in Iceland! It’ll slow down our transmission latency by two seconds, but it creates a titanium-grade encryption wall they can’t punch through!”

A sharp *click* echoed through the room as the backup relay engaged. On the studio monitors, the digital static vanished instantly, replaced by a crystal-clear, uncompressed video feed of the leather journal’s pages.

Across the state, millions of citizens who had tuned in out of curiosity now watched in stunned silence as high-resolution scans of Arthur Sterling’s handwritten ledgers—complete with bank routing numbers, signed payoffs, and secret property deeds—flashed across their screens.

In the state capital, panic rippled through the legislative assembly. Emergency phones began ringing simultaneously on the mahogany desks of senior lawmakers. Several high-ranking judges sitting in private chambers hurriedly packed their briefcases, realizing that their immunity had just evaporated into thin air.

“We’ve stabilized the stream!” Emily cried out, watching the global viewer counter spike past two million concurrent connections. “Mom, look at the chat logs! People from all over the country are downloading the archive!”

“Let them download it,” I said softly, staring directly into the camera lens with unwavering resolve. “The law is no longer a weapon for the corrupt. The reckoning has begun.”

Just as the broadcast reached its climax, a heavy thud echoed from the heavy metal fire door at the back of the warehouse. Someone was trying to break through the exterior locks with a hydraulic battering ram.

Marcus’s face drained of color. “They found our physical location! The state tactical police are outside!”

“Lock the inner security doors, Marcus,” I instructed calmly, not missing a beat as I continued reading the final entries of the journal into the microphone. “Let them try to break in while the entire world is watching live.”

A deafening crash shook the warehouse walls as the outer door gave way, followed by the heavy, synchronized boots of armed men storming the facility.
