Chapter 14 - The Shadow's Bargain

The visiting room of the federal penitentiary smelled of cheap disinfectant, damp concrete, and stale coffee. Behind the thick, scratched Plexiglas partition sat Victor Sterling. Gone was the tailored Italian suit and the arrogant smirk; he wore an orange jumpsuit that hung loosely on his frail, stress-thinned frame.

On the other side of the glass sat Richard Vance, who had managed to secure a slightly better holding arrangement due to his ongoing cooperation with federal investigators regarding secondary shell companies.

“You look terrible, Victor,” Richard muttered coldly, lighting a contraband cigarette that a bribed guard had slipped him through the slot. “The appellate court rejected our final motion for a reduced sentence. We’re looking at twenty-five minimum, no parole.”

Victor slammed his fist against the Plexiglas partition, his face twisting into a mask of pure, unadulterated rage. “This is all her fault! If your father’s clean-up crew had eliminated Margaret and Emily when they had the chance, none of this would have happened!”

“Shut your mouth, you pathetic idiot,” Richard hissed, leaning forward until his nose was nearly touching the glass. “You’re the one who couldn’t control your own household. You had to parade your cruelty in public, inviting an old judge to dissect our entire financial empire right under our noses.”

Victor slumped back into his metal chair, his shoulders shaking with impotent fury. “Is there really no way out? No hidden assets left? Nothing?”

Richard took a slow drag of his cigarette, his cold eyes narrowing as he stared through the smoke. “There’s one thing. But it doesn't involve money.”

“What is it?” Victor whispered desperately, grasping at any straw of hope.

“Before Arthur died, he didn’t just keep a written journal,” Richard said quietly, his voice dropping to a low hiss. “He kept a secondary digital backup vault—a decentralized archive containing the personal secrets, hidden bank accounts, and compromising black-mail files of every major political figure in this state. Whoever controls that vault holds absolute leverage over the entire government.”

“Where is it?” Victor demanded, his eyes widening with manic desperation. “How do we get it?”

“We don’t,” Richard smiled thinly, stubbing out his cigarette on the steel table. “Someone else has to find it for us. Someone currently enjoying a peaceful life in a sunlit cottage.”

Victor stared at Richard for a long moment, realization dawning across his ruined face. “Margaret.”

“Exactly,” Richard whispered. “And she has no idea that the game isn’t over yet.”
