Chapter 6 - The Mother Who Chose the Money

Adrian stayed at the Moretti estate.

He hated it.

Lucian hated it more.

Rosa found both of them exhausting.

“If either of you damages my dining table,” she announced at breakfast, “I will personally shoot you.”

Nobody doubted her.

Camille Vale called at 9:04 a.m.

Adrian answered.

“Mother.”

She was crying.

“Your father has lost his mind.”

Adrian looked at Lucian.

“What happened?”

“He knows you met Moretti.”

“How?”

“I don’t know.”

I knew.

Charles always knew.

Camille lowered her voice.

“He locked me out of the house.”

Adrian stood.

“Where are you?”

“Hotel Drake.”

“Stay there.”

“No.”

Her voice changed.

“I need the blue ledger.”

I froze.

Lucian noticed.

Adrian did too.

“What blue ledger?”

Silence.

Then Camille whispered, “Don’t pretend.”

Adrian put the call on speaker.

Camille continued.

“The one Elena’s father kept.”

I looked at Lucian.

So Camille knew.

Adrian said, “Why?”

“Because it contains accounts in my name.”

There it was.

Not fear for her son.

Money.

Adrian’s face hardened.

“You helped him.”

“I protected this family.”

“You helped Father kill people?”

“No!”

Too fast.

Camille started crying harder.

“You don’t understand what it was like living with him.”

Maybe true.

Still not enough.

I stepped closer.

“Camille.”

Silence.

She recognized my voice.

“Elena.”

“You touched my veil yesterday and told me to leave quietly.”

“I was trying to protect you.”

I almost laughed.

Apparently everyone had been protecting me.

No wonder my life had fallen apart.

“Did you help Charles poison my father?”

“No.”

“Did Vanessa?”

Silence.

“Camille.”

“She delivered medication.”

My stomach turned.

“Did she know what it was for?”

“I don’t know.”

Lucian wrote something for Marco.

Trace call.

Camille continued.

“Charles kept records. Insurance. He never trusted anyone.”

“Where?”

No answer.

Adrian said, “Mom.”

“Promise you’ll protect me.”

His face twisted.

“From Father?”

“From prosecution.”

That told us everything.

She was not innocent.

Adrian closed his eyes.

“I can’t promise that.”

Camille began sobbing.

“After everything I did for you?”

Adrian whispered, “That is exactly the problem.”

Then the line went dead.

Marco shook his head.

“Call routed through three networks. We got the hotel, but she left twenty minutes ago.”

Lucian looked at me.

“Blue ledger?”

“My father’s notebooks used different colors by year.”

“Was there a blue one?”

“Yes.”

“Did we find it?”

No.

We had found black, green, and red.

Not blue.

I thought about my father’s storage unit.

Numbers sleep.

Maybe another riddle.

Blue.

He always used blue for personal accounts.

Not foundation accounts.

I suddenly knew.

“The cemetery.”

Lucian stared.

“What?”

“My father’s family plot has a blue granite marker beside my mother’s grave. He called it the blue book because it had dates.”

Rosa frowned.

“Your father hid a ledger in a cemetery?”

“He once hid tax documents in a freezer.”

Lucian stood.

“I like him.”

We went to Saint Agnes.

My parents’ plot sat beneath an old maple tree.

Blue granite marker.

The base had been loosened recently.

Someone else had searched.

But beneath the stone, wrapped in waterproof plastic, was a small notebook.

Blue cover.

My father’s final ledger.

Inside were account numbers.

Payments.

Names.

And one section titled PERSONAL LEVERAGE — C. VALE.

Blackmail records.

Charles had documented affairs, debts, addictions, crimes.

Judges.

Police officers.

Hospital administrators.

Executives.

Politicians.

And family.

Camille Vale: offshore account, $6.2M.

Vanessa Cross: controlled prescriptions, false clinic billing.

Adrian Vale: none.

I stared.

Nothing.

My father had written beside Adrian’s name:

NOT CORRUPT. WEAK.

That hurt more than if he had called him criminal.

Because it was accurate.

Then Lucian turned a page.

MATTEO MORETTI.

Beside his name:

NO LEVERAGE FOUND.

Then another note.

L.M. — DO NOT INVOLVE UNLESS MATTEO DIES.

Lucian stared.

My father had known him.

Or known of him.

The next page contained an address.

An old apartment near Bridgeport.

We went.

Inside, hidden behind a loose wall panel, we found a video recorder.

One file.

My father sat in front of the camera.

Older.

Tired.

“Lucian Moretti,” he began.

Lucian froze.

“If you are watching this, Matteo is probably dead, and I probably am too.”

My throat closed.

My father looked directly into the camera.

“Charles Vale is not merely laundering money. He is buying institutional silence.”

He listed names.

Hospital executives.

City contractors.

A judge.

Then he said something worse.

“Charles intends to use Adrian as successor, but Adrian does not have his father’s appetite. That makes him dangerous to Charles.”

Adrian stood behind us.

His face went pale.

My father continued.

“If my daughter becomes connected to Adrian, remove her from this immediately.”

I started crying.

He had known.

Maybe not the wedding.

But the danger.

Then:

“Elena, if you are watching too, I’m sorry.”

I covered my mouth.

“You will want to know why I didn’t tell you.”

The image flickered.

“Because I was afraid you would do exactly what you are doing now.”

Lucian looked at me.

My father smiled sadly.

“You inherited your mother’s courage and my inability to leave numbers alone.”

I laughed through tears.

Then he became serious.

“The evidence Charles fears most is not financial.”

We leaned closer.

“It is a recording.”

A date.

The night Matteo died.

“Matteo called me from his car. He knew he was being followed. The call was recorded automatically on my office system.”

Lucian stopped breathing.

My father continued.

“The recording identifies the man Charles hired.”

“Where?” I whispered.

My father answered as if he heard me.

“The original is in the safest place I knew.”

Then the video ended.

No location.

Adrian stared.

“That’s it?”

I replayed.

Safest place I knew.

My father trusted few places.

Home?

No.

Office?

Searched.

Bank?

Maybe.

Then I remembered something he always said.

Hospitals are safe because everyone is too busy to steal paperwork.

The hospital where he died.

His room.

I looked at Lucian.

“His medical archive.”

We requested the personal effects inventory.

One item had never been returned.

A small digital voice recorder.

Transferred to hospital administration after his death.

Signed for by—

Camille Vale.

My blood went cold.

May you like

She had it.

And if she still did, she carried the only direct recording of the night Matteo was murdered.
