Chapter 7 - The Recording

Camille called again that evening.

This time, she asked for me.

“Elena.”

Her voice was quieter.

No crying.

No performance.

“I have something your father wanted you to hear.”

“The recorder.”

Silence.

“You know.”

“Yes.”

“Then bring me the blue ledger.”

Lucian shook his head.

I ignored him.

“Where?”

“Vale Foundation headquarters.”

Adrian stood.

“No.”

Camille continued.

“Come alone.”

“No.”

“If Moretti comes, I leave.”

Lucian mouthed: absolutely not.

I almost smiled.

“Fine.”

He looked furious.

I ended the call.

“You’re not going alone.”

“I know.”

“That was too easy.”

“I said fine, not yes.”

Marco smirked.

We planned carefully.

Camille believed I arrived alone.

I entered Vale Foundation headquarters at 8:00 p.m.

Lucian’s team occupied a building across the street.

Adrian stayed hidden in the parking garage.

I wore a microphone.

No weapons.

Just the blue ledger inside my bag.

Camille waited in Charles’s office.

She looked ten years older.

Pearls.

Cream coat.

Perfect hair.

Shaking hands.

“You brought it?”

“Yes.”

She held up a voice recorder.

“Original?”

“Yes.”

“Play it.”

“Elena.”

“Play it.”

She pressed a button.

Static.

Then Matteo’s voice.

Breathing hard.

“Daniel, it’s Matteo.”

My father answered.

“Where are you?”

“Lake Shore. Black SUV behind me.”

Lucian heard through the mic.

I imagined him listening across the street.

Matteo continued.

“I saw Pike at Vale’s office.”

My heart raced.

Gordon Pike.

Northline.

My father asked, “Are you sure?”

“Yes. Charles hired him.”

Tires screamed in the recording.

Matteo cursed.

Then:

“If anything happens, Lucian didn’t know. Tell him I was going to federal—”

Impact.

Metal.

Static.

Then another voice.

Farther away.

Gordon Pike.

“Finish it.”

The recording ended.

Camille stopped it.

I felt sick.

Proof.

Not every detail.

Enough to reopen the case.

I held out my hand.

“The recorder.”

“The ledger first.”

“No.”

Her eyes hardened.

“You think you can bargain with me?”

“Yes.”

I looked at her.

“Because you’re terrified.”

She slapped me.

Hard.

My head turned.

Across the street, I knew Lucian was probably halfway through a wall.

I slowly faced Camille again.

“Feel better?”

She stared.

“You ruined my family.”

“No.”

I touched my cheek.

“Your husband did.”

The office door opened.

Charles Vale entered.

Everything stopped.

Camille went white.

“Charles.”

He looked at her with disappointment.

Not rage.

Worse.

“You always were weak.”

Then at me.

“Elena.”

I backed away.

He carried no visible weapon.

That meant nothing.

“You should have married my son,” he said.

I laughed.

“That seems contradictory.”

“If you had married him, you would have been easier to control.”

There it was.

Truth.

Camille moved toward the door.

Charles said, “Stay.”

She stopped.

Adrian’s voice suddenly came from the hallway.

“No.”

Charles turned.

Adrian entered.

“You told her to leave me.”

“I told her to survive you.”

Charles smiled.

“My disappointing son finally grew a spine.”

Adrian stepped closer.

“You killed Matteo.”

“I solved a problem.”

Camille gasped.

He looked at her.

“Don’t perform now.”

Then he saw the recorder.

His expression changed.

Only slightly.

Enough.

He moved.

Fast.

He grabbed Camille.

Pulled a pistol from beneath his jacket.

Pressed it against her side.

“Drop the recorder.”

I froze.

Camille began shaking.

“Charles.”

“Quiet.”

Adrian stepped forward.

“Dad.”

“Stay back.”

Lucian’s voice crackled in my hidden earpiece.

“Keep him talking.”

I swallowed.

“Why my father?”

Charles looked at me.

“Because he refused to understand economics.”

“You poisoned him.”

“He was already sick.”

“You murdered him.”

“I accelerated an outcome.”

My stomach turned.

The microphone captured everything.

I asked, “And Matteo?”

“He was going to destroy decades of work.”

“What work?”

“Power.”

The answer came with pride.

That was his weakness.

Men like Charles wanted recognition even while hiding.

Adrian kept inching closer.

Charles noticed.

“Stop.”

He moved the gun.

Camille cried out.

Then she did something none of us expected.

She drove her heel down onto Charles’s foot.

He flinched.

Adrian lunged.

The gun fired into the ceiling.

I grabbed Camille.

We dropped behind the desk.

Lucian and Marco entered seconds later.

Charles aimed.

Lucian reached him first.

They hit the floor.

Hard.

Adrian kicked the gun away.

Marco secured Charles.

No execution.

No revenge.

Just handcuffs.

Lucian knelt beside me.

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

He checked anyway.

My cheek.

My wrists.

My eyes.

“Lucian.”

He stopped.

“I’m fine.”

His breath left slowly.

Behind us, Charles laughed.

“You think this ends anything?”

Lucian looked at him.

“Yes.”

Charles smiled.

“You’re still a Moretti.”

Lucian became very still.

Then he stood.

“You’re right.”

For one terrible second, I thought he might kill him.

Instead, Lucian took the recorder from Camille.

“And that’s why I know exactly what becoming you costs.”

He handed it to Marco.

“Call federal authorities.”

Charles’s smile disappeared.

That was the night the Vale empire began to collapse.

But not before one last betrayal.

May you like

When federal agents arrived, Camille was gone.

And so was the blue ledger.
