Chapter 3 - The Silent Witness

The following morning brought a new, unfamiliar tension to the hospital room. Chloe had not slept a wink, her mind racing through endless possibilities. She realized she couldn't win by fighting directly. She had to play the game, or at least pretend to.

"Have you made your decision?" The lawyer was back, his presence as cold and professional as before. He didn't wait for her to answer, just placed the papers on her lap.

"I need to speak to Julian," she said, her voice steady. "I need to know what he thinks." The lawyer sneered. "Mr. Sterling has no input in this matter. This is between you and the family's legal department."

"I'm his wife," Chloe retorted, a sliver of defiance returning. "I have rights."

"Rights," the lawyer mused, a cruel glint in his eye. "In the world of the Sterlings, rights are bought, not granted. You have no rights, only the ones we choose to give you."

He left the room, leaving her alone again. This time, however, she didn't just cry. She began to observe. She realized that the nurses, the cleaners, the security guards—they were all terrified. They were all afraid of Victoria. But they were also human. She started to pay closer attention to the woman who brought her medicine each day, a quiet, older nurse with a gentle touch.

"What's your name?" Chloe asked one morning, trying to sound as casual as possible. "Elena," the nurse replied, not meeting her gaze. "I'm sorry, Ms. Miller, but I’m not allowed to talk to patients about anything other than their care."

"I understand," Chloe replied, her tone soft. "But I need help, Elena. I'm being held here against my will. Please, just tell me if there's any way to get a message out."

Elena hesitated, her hands trembling as she adjusted the IV. "I can't, Ms. Miller. They... they watch everything."

"Please," Chloe pleaded, her eyes filled with desperation. "They're going to take my baby."

Elena looked around the room, then leaned in close. "Look in the ventilation shaft behind the bed," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "Something was hidden there months ago. It might help you." And with that, she hurried out of the room.

Chloe waited until the room was empty. She felt a surge of hope, a desperate, irrational hope. She reached behind the bed, feeling for the ventilation cover. It was loose. She pulled it off, her fingers scraping against the rough metal. Her hand brushed against a cold, hard object. She pulled it out.

It was a small, encrypted thumb drive and a note written in elegant, shaky handwriting. She quickly hid it under her mattress as the door opened again. It was Victoria.

"I see you're still thinking, Chloe," Victoria said, her voice dripping with malice. "Don't bother. The decision has already been made."

"I know," Chloe said, her voice strangely calm. She felt a strange sense of power for the first time in weeks. She had something. She didn't know what it was yet, but she knew it was important. Victoria narrowed her eyes, as if she could sense the shift in the room. She didn't stay long, which was a relief. As soon as she left, Chloe grabbed the thumb drive. She had to find a way to see what was on it. Her entire life depended on it.
