Chapter 4 - The Hidden Truth

Chloe lay in bed, the thumb drive burning a hole in her pocket. She had managed to smuggle it inside her gown, hiding it where no one would think to look. The problem was how to access it. She had no laptop, no way to connect it to anything. She was still under 24/7 observation.

She needed a way to get out, even for a few minutes. She began to complain about her back, her legs, her overall condition. "I need a wheelchair," she told the nurses. "I need to move." They, of course, checked with Victoria's people, who eventually agreed to give her short, monitored walks down the hall.

It was on one of these walks that she spotted a public computer in the hospital's small library for patients. It was a long shot, but she had to try. She waited for her guard to be distracted, then quickly rolled her wheelchair to the library.

She plugged in the thumb drive, her heart hammering against her ribs. It was an old, simple system, but the files opened easily. They were financial documents—thousands of them. They detailed years of money laundering, bribery, and illegal arms deals, all tied to the Sterling family. But that wasn't the most shocking part. There were also documents detailing the medical experiments they had conducted on unsuspecting patients, experiments designed to test the limits of human endurance and the effects of certain drugs.

Chloe’s stomach turned. This was worse than she had ever imagined. This wasn't just a powerful family; it was a criminal organization, a syndicate of absolute evil. And they were using her, her baby, as a pawn in their twisted game.

She quickly copied the files to her email, a private, encrypted account she had created long ago for emergencies, then deleted the history on the computer. She had to be fast. She was back in her room, the thumb drive hidden away, when her guard came back. He didn't seem to notice anything, but she knew she was playing with fire.

That night, she couldn't sleep. The weight of the secret she carried was immense. She now had the power to destroy them, but she also knew that if they found out she had these documents, she would be killed instantly. She was no longer just a victim; she was a witness, a whistleblower in the making.

She needed to get these files to the authorities, to someone who could actually stop them. But she was trapped. She didn't know who to trust. Every institution, every official, every agency could be on the Sterling payroll. She was alone, and she was in deep.

She thought back to the note Elena had given her. It wasn't signed, but the handwriting was familiar. She looked at it again, really looked at it. She realized with a start that it wasn't just elegant; it was precise, disciplined. It was the handwriting of someone who had been educated, someone who had been part of their world. Could it be Julian's sister, the one who had disappeared years ago? If so, she had an ally. But where was she? Was she alive, or was this the legacy of another victim?
