Chapter 6 - Whispers in the Sanctuary

Days bled into a tense, surreal routine inside the estate.

Cora was provided with clothes, books, and absolute freedom within the mansion's interior, but armed guards remained stationed outside her suite twenty-four hours a day. She spent her hours pacing the minimalist hallways, reading medical journals provided by Tomas, and trying to process the sheer madness of her new reality.

Julian was rarely seen during the day. He operated his empire from a heavily fortified home office on the lower level, holding hushed meetings with syndicate captains and plotting the dismantling of the Dresco family.

On the fourth evening of her captivity, Cora ventured downstairs in search of coffee. The sprawling kitchen was quiet, illuminated only by the soft glow of under-cabinet lights. As she poured herself a cup from the automated espresso machine, a soft click echoed from the adjacent hallway.

She froze, setting the mug down. "Who's there?"

A familiar voice answered softly from the shadows. "Relax, Cora. It's just me."

Cora spun around, her eyes widening in absolute shock as a figure stepped into the light.

"Priya?" Cora gasped, her mug slipping from her fingers and shattering against the tile floor. "What... what are you doing here?!"

Priya Sharma looked entirely different than she did at the public hospital. Her nurse's scrubs were gone, replaced by a sleek, dark silk blouse. Her warm, friendly smile had vanished, replaced by an expression of cold, calculating composure.

"It's good to see you too, Cora," Priya said smoothly, stepping over the broken ceramic shards without a flinch.

Cora backed away, a sickening realization blooming in her chest. "You... you work for them. You work for the Drescos."

Priya sighed softly, leaning against the marble kitchen island. "I wouldn't put it quite like that. I'm an operative. My job was to keep an eye on you at the hospital, make sure you stayed grounded in your routine, and report back on your mental state."

"You were spying on me?" Cora's voice trembled with a mixture of betrayal and fury. "We were friends! I trusted you!"

"Friendship is a luxury in our line of work, Cora," Priya said calmly, though a flicker of genuine remorse crossed her eyes. "I genuinely liked you. You're a good person. But when the Drescos needed someone close to you to figure out where you hid after the auction, it wasn't hard for me to connect the dots."

"How did you get into this estate?" Cora demanded, her eyes darting toward the hallway where guards were stationed. "This place is a fortress!"

"Let's just say I have friends in high places," Priya smiled thinly. "And I didn't come here to hurt you, Cora. I came to give you a warning."

Cora stared at her former friend, her heart pounding. "What kind of warning?"

"Julian Voss is building a war chest to wipe out the Dresco family," Priya whispered urgently, stepping closer. "And you are sitting right in the center of the crossfire. The moment Julian makes his move, his enemies will come for you to break him. If you want to survive, you need to leave with me tonight. I have a car waiting outside the perimeter gates."

Cora looked into the eyes of the woman she had trusted for over a year. Everything was a lie. Every shared coffee break, every comforting conversation, every smile—all of it had been an operation.

Before Cora could answer, the kitchen doorway darkened.

A tall, towering silhouette blocked the exit. Julian Voss stood there, his face carved from ice, his dark eyes locked entirely on Priya.

"You took a massive risk walking into my house, Miss Sharma," Julian’s voice cut through the room like a razor blade.

Priya stiffened, her hand sliding imperceptibly toward her jacket pocket.

In a fraction of a second, Tomas materialized behind Priya, a heavy silencer-fitted pistol pressing firmly against the base of her skull.

"Don't even think about it," Tomas whispered.
