Chapter 9 - Fire in the Rain

The front gates of the estate exploded in a deafening roar of fire and flying shrapnel.
Through the security monitors, Cora watched as multiple black SUVs plowed through the wreckage, disgorging dozens of heavily armed men wearing tactical gear and bearing the insignia of the Dresco syndicate.
Gunfire immediately shattered the silence of the night, echoing through the corridors as Julian’s guards returned fire from fortified positions.
Cora stood inside the control room, a heavy 9mm pistol gripped tightly in her trembling hands. Her heart hammered like a trapped bird against her ribs, but her mind was terrifyingly clear. There was no going back to the hospital, no returning to her old, exhausted life.
Suddenly, the heavy steel door of the control room buckled inward with a violent crash.
Before Cora could raise her weapon, the door was blown off its hinges. A massive Dresco enforcer burst into the room, leveling an assault rifle right at her chest.
Cora didn't hesitate. Remembering the basic firearm instruction Tomas had given her an hour ago, she squared her stance, pulled the trigger, and fired.
The recoil slammed back into her shoulder, throwing her off balance, but the bullet found its mark. The enforcer grunted, stumbled backward, and collapsed onto the concrete floor.
Cora stood frozen, her ears ringing, staring at the fallen man. She had just taken a life. The heavy reality of the underworld crashed over her soul like a tidal wave.
"Good shot, Miss Whitaker," a low, steady voice murmured from the doorway.
Julian stepped into the room. His suit jacket was gone, his white shirt sleeves rolled up to his elbows, revealing scarred forearms and a combat knife gripped in his right hand. There was a streak of blood across his cheek—not his own.
He looked at the fallen enforcer, then up at Cora, his dark eyes burning with an intense, fiery devotion that defied his cold reputation.
"Are you hurt?" Julian asked, stepping over the body to reach her.
"No," Cora whispered, lowering the smoking pistol. "I'm okay."
Julian reached out, gently taking the gun from her trembling fingers and tossing it aside. He grabbed her by the shoulders, pulling her hard against his chest. For the first time since she had met him, the terrifying crime boss held her as if she were the most fragile, precious thing in existence.
"It's almost over," Julian murmured against her hair. "Tomas has cornered their leadership in the courtyard. The Dresco family is finished."
Just as the words left his lips, a sharp, metallic click echoed from the shattered doorway behind them.
Julian spun around instantly, shielding Cora with his own body.
Standing in the frame was Viktor Dresco himself—the aging, ruthless patriarch of the syndicate, bleeding from a shoulder wound, holding a revolver pointed squarely at Julian’s back.
"It ends here, Voss," Viktor snarled, his face twisted in desperate hatred. "If I go down, I'm taking your prized possession with me."
Viktor shifted his aim downward, centering the barrel directly on Cora.
Julian didn't hesitate. With blinding speed, he raised his combat knife and threw it with lethal precision.

The blade flashed through the red-lit air, burying itself hilt-deep into Viktor Dresco’s chest. The syndicate boss gasped, dropped his weapon, and collapsed backward onto the floor, dead before he hit the ground.
Silence rushed back into the room, broken only by the pattering of rain against the shattered windows.
