Chapter 10 - The Uninvited Visitor

The weekend passed in a blur of legal preparation, quiet reflection, and restoring absolute control over my personal and corporate domain. By Sunday evening, the media storm surrounding Daniel Vance's spectacular arrest had already hit the front pages of the Boston Globe and the financial columns of the Wall Street Journal: Tech Executive Arrested in Multi-Million Dollar Corporate Fraud and Forgery Scandal; Wife, Former DOJ Prosecutor, Unmasks Plot.

The headlines were deliciously brutal, portraying Daniel as a grasping corporate swindler who had drastically underestimated his brilliant, legally trained wife.

I was sitting in the sunroom with a cup of chamomile tea and a stack of corporate restructuring documents when the security gate intercom at the front entrance of the brownstone buzzed sharply. I glanced at the wall-mounted security monitor. Standing outside the wrought-iron gate, shivering slightly in the chilly New England wind, was a woman whose face made my tea freeze halfway to my lips.

It wasn't Vanessa Sterling. It was someone I never expected to see standing on my doorstep.

Clara Vance—Daniel’s younger sister, a chic, ambitious corporate PR consultant based in New York—stared directly into the security camera lens, her eyes red-rimmed and frantic, her designer coat clutched tightly around her neck.

"Eleanor! I know you're in there! Please, you have to open the gate!" Clara’s voice crackled through the intercom speaker, desperate and pleading. "I need to talk to you. It's about Noah. It's about my nephew!"

I stared at the monitor for a long, calculating moment. Noah. The five-year-old boy in the airport lounge who had looked up at Daniel with innocent adoration, calling him Daddy. Vanessa Sterling’s son—or so Daniel had claimed.

What secrets was Clara hiding? What else did the Vance family know about the web of lies Daniel had constructed over the past decade?

I reached out, pressed the gate release button, and watched on the monitor as the heavy iron gate clicked open, allowing Clara to walk up the stone pathway toward my front door.
