Chapter 19 - The Unfinished Thread

I froze, my wineglass suspended halfway to my lips. Miriam noticed the sudden shift in my posture and followed my gaze out the bistro window toward the idling black town car.

"What is it, Eleanor?" Miriam asked, her professional instincts kicking in instantly as her eyes narrowed on the vehicle. "Do you recognize that car?"

"Victoria Sterling," I murmured quietly, keeping my eyes locked on the tinted window across the street. "She's sitting in the back of that town car."

Before Miriam could respond, the town car's headlights flashed twice, the engine revbed softly, and the vehicle pulled away smoothly into the evening traffic, disappearing down the Back Bay boulevard like a ghost dissolving into the mist.

I lowered my wineglass back onto the table, a cold, prickling sensation of unease rippling down my spine. Victoria had handed over the encrypted flash drive that destroyed her sister Vanessa's plea deal and sealed Daniel's doom. She had acted like a terrified former compliance officer seeking immunity and protection.

So why was she lingering outside my dinner table like a specter?

"Did she leave anything out of those files?" Miriam asked sharply, her tone shifting from relaxed friend to elite legal counsel in a fraction of a second. "Did she hold back any leverage?"

"Not according to the federal audit team," I replied thoughtfully, tapping my fingernail against the edge of the table. "The encrypted flash drive contained every single offshore account, wire instruction, and internal email associated with Meridian Capital's shadow portfolio. Federal investigators verified every byte."

"Then why is she watching you?" Miriam pressed, her eyes scanning the empty street where the town car had vanished.

I stared out the window into the dark, glittering night, realizing something fundamental about the world I inhabited. Predators don't simply vanish when the alpha male is locked in a cage; they regroup, recalculate, and wait for the next opening.

Victoria Sterling hadn't handed over those files purely out of civic duty or sisterly betrayal. She had executed a surgical strike of her own—clearing out her sister, destroying Daniel, and positioning herself to inherit whatever remnants of Meridian Capital's hidden assets hadn't been seized by federal receivership.

And she was watching to see how I would react.

"She's not a threat, Miriam," I said quietly, a calm, razor-sharp smile touching my lips as I raised my wineglass once more. "She's just a survivor testing the waters of a new apex predator."

Miriam looked at me for a long moment, then broke into a slow, knowing grin. "God help anyone who ever tries to play chess against you, Eleanor."

"They won't try twice," I replied.
