Chapter 17 - The Counter-Stalking Operation

Special Agent Marcus Vance and his federal cyber-crime task force moved with lightning speed once I handed over the cryptographic attribution data linking the extortion flash drive directly to Victor Vance. Within twelve hours, federal warrants were signed, and a joint tactical operation was established between the FBI’s financial crimes division and our bank’s internal corporate security architecture.
The plan was as brilliant as it was dangerous: we would play along with the extortion demand, initiating a staged, monitored cryptocurrency transfer using a honeypot wallet managed by federal financial investigators. The moment Victor Vance attempted to access or redistribute the decentralized funds from his receiving node, our digital traps would pinpoint his exact physical IP coordinates and physical server location in real-time.
I sat at my workstation in the secure federal task force briefing room downtown, staring at the glowing geospatial tracking map displayed across the main presentation wall. Beside me stood Special Agent Marcus Vance and a team of armed digital forensics analysts.
“All systems are locked and loaded, Claire,” Marcus said, glancing down at his smartwatch. “The honeypot wallet transaction has been initiated on the dark web relay. If Victor Vance takes the bait, his decryption handshake will expose his physical relay server within ninety seconds.”
“He’ll take the bait,” I replied coldly, my eyes fixed on the pulsing red beacon on the map. “Greed always outweighs caution with men like the Vance brothers. They believe they’re the smartest criminals in any room.”
Thirty-four minutes ticked by in absolute silence, broken only by the rhythmic clatter of server fans and whispered communications from the tactical teams stationed across state lines. The forty-eight-hour extortion deadline was rapidly approaching its final climax.
Suddenly, a sharp acoustic alarm pinged across the tactical console.
“We have movement!” shouted a lead forensics analyst, slamming his fingers onto his keyboard. “Decryption handshake detected! The receiving wallet has accessed the first tranche of honeypot funds!”
“Trace the egress vector! Where is the physical signal originating?!” Marcus demanded, leaning over the console.
Lines of cascading hexadecimal code cascaded across the screen, resolving rapidly into a precise geographical coordinate set.
“Got it!” the analyst yelled. “Signal origin locked! Abandoned commercial warehouse district on the industrial outskirts of the city, Docking Bay 14. IP traffic indicates an active local server relay broadcasting the extortion feed right now!”

Marcus straightened up instantly, barking orders into his tactical radio mic. “All units, this is Alpha Lead! Execute tactical deployment! Surround Docking Bay 14 immediately! Appress suspect with extreme caution—suspect is considered armed and dangerous!”
I watched the live satellite uplink feed on the monitor as heavily armored federal tactical vehicles converged on the desolate warehouse district, their headlights slicing through the foggy night air like surgical knives. The trap was finally springing shut.
