Chapter 6 - The Wedding Planner’s Ultimatum

By Tuesday afternoon, the shockwave of the trust freeze had completely obliterated my family’s fragile social standing in our upscale suburban community. Word travels fast when bounced checks start flying across country clubs and high-end wedding vendors.
Vanessa’s dream wedding—a lavish, $80,000 spectacle designed to impress people she barely liked—was imploding in slow motion. Vendor after vendor began pulling out of contracts as credit card authorizations failed and wire transfers were rejected by the newly appointed trust administrators under my supervision.
I was sitting at my desk reviewing corporate fraud analytics when my corporate cell phone buzzed with an unknown, high-priority caller ID originating from a local resort area. I answered, expecting another irate family member.
“Is this Claire Montgomery?” a sharp, polished female voice demanded without any polite preamble. “My name is Vivienne Dubois. I am the lead wedding coordination consultant for Vanessa Montgomery’s upcoming nuptials at the Grand Vista Resort.”
“Yes, Ms. Dubois. I’m Claire. What can I do for you?” I asked, leaning back in my ergonomic chair.
“What you can do, Ms. Montgomery, is explain why your sister’s payment accounts have completely collapsed over the last forty-eight hours,” Vivienne snapped, her tone dripping with corporate arrogance. “We are currently holding sixty guests’ reservations, a non-refundable catering deposit shortfall of eighteen thousand dollars, and a bridal suite balance that has bounced three separate times today. If this matter isn't resolved within the next two hours with certified funds, the Grand Vista will formally cancel the reservation, blacklist your family from all future bookings, and pursue legal damages for breach of contract.”
I let out a soft, calm sigh. “Ms. Dubois, let me be entirely transparent with you. I am not paying for my sister’s wedding. I never agreed to pay for it, my credit card was stolen and used without my authorization to initiate those deposits, and my parents’ financial accounts have been legally frozen due to fraud investigations.”
There was a sharp intake of breath on the other end of the line. “Stolen? Fraud investigations? Listen to me, young lady, I don't care about your family drama or your internal disputes! Your sister assured me that her sister—a high-ranking bank investigator—was personally underwriting the entire grand event as a family gift!”
“My sister lied to you,” I replied smoothly. “And if your resort continued to process unauthorized digital wallet tokens provisioned from third-party devices without multi-factor verification, your compliance department is going to have a very difficult conversation with our federal auditors by the end of the week. I suggest you take up Vanessa’s financial shortfall with her fiancé, Chad. After all, isn't he the one whose name is supposed to be on the marriage license?”
“Chad Montgomery… excuse me, Chad Sterling is currently unreachable, his cell phone has been disconnected, and his credit cards were declined when we tried to charge the backup catering fee this morning!” Vivienne shrieked, losing her professional composure entirely. “Nobody can reach him! He’s completely vanished!”
I paused, my eyebrows lifting in genuine surprise. “Vanished? What do you mean he vanished?”
“I mean, exactly what I said!” Vivienne hissed. “The groom has gone completely off the grid forty-eight hours after your parents’ accounts froze! Now your mother is sobbing in our lobby claiming you destroyed her life, and your sister has locked herself in the bridal suite bathroom refusing to come out!”
“Sounds like a magnificent production,” I said dryly. “Good luck with the cleanup, Ms. Dubois.”
I terminated the call before she could scream another word. I stared at my computer screen for a moment, letting the implications sink in. Chad Sterling—the unemployed, debt-ridden fiancé who considered a luxury lifestyle his birthright—had jumped ship the exact second the family money dried up. He hadn't loved Vanessa; he had loved her parents' illusion of infinite wealth.
I opened a secondary browser window and pulled up Chad’s public social media profiles and business registries out of professional curiosity. What I found in public corporate registries made my jaw drop. Chad wasn't just a broke millennial between jobs; he was currently facing three civil lawsuits for real estate investment fraud in another state under an alias.

My phone buzzed again. This time, it was a direct text message from an unblocked number: Vanessa.
Vanessa: *'Claire, please… you have to help us. Chad is gone. He took my savings, he took Mom’s spare car, and the wedding is completely ruined. Please pick up the phone. I’m begging you.'*
