Chapter 5 - THE SNAKE'S TRIUMPH

The days leading up to the gala passed in a blur of intense preparation. Under my father’s guidance, I underwent a
complete transformation.
For eight years, I had worn the clothes Daniel chose for me—high-necked, loose-fitting pastel dresses designed
to make me look soft, maternal, and entirely unthreatening. I had worn my hair in a simple, practical bun, and
applied barely any makeup. Daniel wanted a shadow, so I had trained myself to blend into the background.
No more.
With the help of my father's top stylists, I reclaimed my identity. We chose a stunning, structured gown of deep
emerald silk. It was sleek, modern, and powerful, featuring a sharp asymmetrical neckline and a subtle slit that
showed off my healed leg. My dark hair was styled into elegant, glossy waves that framed a face that was no longer
hidden behind exhaustion and fear.
I looked in the mirror and barely recognized the woman staring back. She wasn't a victim. She was a reckoning.
Meanwhile, Daniel was living in a fool’s paradise.
Believing his wife and son were buried deep beneath tons of concrete in a city still struggling to clear its ruins,
he had quickly moved Vanessa into our family home. My father's security team sent daily updates, including photos
of Vanessa wearing my jewelry, lounging by our pool, and directing movers to throw my personal belongings into
trash bags.
Every photo was a log on the fire burning inside me.
On Wednesday night, the eve of the gala, Daniel held an intimate cocktail party at our house for his closest
business associates to "celebrate" the upcoming partnership with Whitmore Global. Thanks to a hidden camera
Marcus had installed in the study, my father and I watched the live feed from our hotel suite in New York.
Daniel was standing by the fireplace, a glass of expensive scotch in his hand, laughing heartily with his lead
investor.
"It’s a tragedy, of course," Daniel was saying, though his face was entirely devoid of grief. "Elena was a sweet
girl, but she just didn't have the stomach for this life. She was always stressed, always sick. And poor Mason...
well, it’s a tragic loss. But one must look to the future. The partnership with Whitmore Global will put Vance
Development on the map. We’re talking international expansion, gentlemen."
Vanessa slid her arm through his, wearing a diamond necklace Daniel had bought her using our joint savings
account. "Danny has been so strong," she purred. "He’s a true visionary. He deserves this success more than
anyone."

"To the future!" Daniel toasted, raising his glass. "And to Grant Whitmore, the man who is about to make us all
very, very rich!"
In our New York suite, my father turned off the screen. The room fell into a heavy, charged silence.
"He's completely detached from reality," Grant said, his voice quiet. "He truly believes he is untouchable."
"He believes his own lies, Dad," I said, looking out the window at the glittering skyline of Manhattan. "He has
spent so many years gaslighting me into believing I was nothing, he actually convinced himself that he is
everything. He thinks the rules don't apply to him."
"Tomorrow night, he learns otherwise," my father said, walking over and placing a steadying hand on my
shoulder. "Are you ready, Elena?"
I turned to him, my emerald gown catching the light, my eyes cold and sharp.

"I’ve been ready for eight years, Dad."
