Chapter 7 - THE COLLAPSE OF AN EMPIRE

Daniel’s breath hitched in his throat. He staggered back a step, his eyes bulging as if he were looking at a ghost.

Vanessa let out a sharp gasp, her grip tightening on his arm so hard her knuckles turned white.

"Elena?" Daniel whispered, his voice trembling violently. "No... no, this is impossible. You... you were in the

hotel. The annex collapsed. You were dead!"

"I survived, Daniel," I said, stepping into the light. My emerald gown rustled softly against the polished floor. I

stood tall, my shoulders back, looking down at him with an expression of cold, detached pity. "No thanks to you, of

course."

"Elena... sweetheart..." Daniel stammered, his face turning a sickly shade of grey. He took a step toward me, his

hands raised in a desperate, pleading gesture. "Oh my god, you're alive! This is a miracle! I... I tried to find you! I

swear I did! The stairwell was blocked, and Vanessa... she was badly hurt, I had to get her to safety first—"

"Save it, Daniel," I cut him off, my voice sharp as a razor. "We watched your press conference. We saw you tell

the world how 'dramatic' I was, and how you 'prayed for a miracle' while you were already moving Vanessa into my

house and throwing my clothes in the trash."

Vanessa’s face went completely pale. "Elena, please... it’s not what it looks like..." she began, her voice shaking.

"Shut up, Vanessa," I said, not even looking at her. My gaze remained locked on Daniel, who looked smaller

and more pathetic by the second.

"This... this is a setup," Daniel whispered, realizing the trap he had walked into. He turned to my father. "Mr.

Whitmore, please. Business is business. The contract—"

"The contract is null and void," Grant said coldly, picking up a thick stack of papers from the table and tossing

them in front of Daniel. "And so is your career."

Daniel looked down at the papers. They weren't contract documents. They were printouts of emails, financial

ledgers, and structural inspection reports.

"What is this?" Daniel gasped.

"Those are the real inspection reports for the Grand Solis Hotel annex," I said, leaning against the edge of the

mahogany table. "The ones showing that you ordered your engineers to hide structural cracks behind marble panels

to secure our investment. The ones showing that you bribed local building inspectors with offshore wire transfers."

Daniel’s eyes darted frantically across the pages. "This... this is stolen data! It’s inadmissible! You can't prove

any of this!"

"Actually, we can," I replied smoothly. "You see, Daniel, you always assumed I was too simple-minded to

understand your business. You left your laptop open, your passwords saved. I’ve been downloading your files for

over a year. And forty minutes ago, my father’s legal team delivered copies of these exact documents to the

Securities and Exchange Commission, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the insurance company you just

attempted to defraud of fifty million dollars."

Daniel looked as if he had been struck by lightning. He collapsed into one of the leather executive chairs, his

breath coming in short, ragged gasps.

"You... you ruined me," he whispered, staring up at me with a mixture of shock and pure, venomous hatred.

"You planned this. You stayed with me, played the quiet little housewife, just to destroy me."

"No, Daniel," I said, walking over to him and leaning down so my face was inches from his. "I stayed with you

because I loved you once, and I wanted to protect my son. But you destroyed yourself the moment you chose your

greed over our son's life. I didn't ruin you. I simply turned on the lights so everyone could see the monster you’ve

always been."

At that moment, the boardroom doors opened again. Two federal agents in dark suits stepped into the room,

followed by two armed NYPD officers.

"Daniel Vance?" the lead agent asked, pulling a badge from his pocket. "You are under arrest for federal

insurance fraud, corporate bribery, and reckless endangerment."

Vanessa immediately let go of Daniel's arm, stepping back as if he were contagious. "I had nothing to do with

this!" she shrieked. "I’m just his secretary! I didn't know anything about the building!"

"We have your emails too, Vanessa," the agent said coldly, pulling out a second pair of handcuffs. "You're

May you like

coming with us."
