Chapter 1 - The Shattered Glass and the Silent Fall

The sirens cut through the silence of the estate like a serrated blade. Blue and red light pulsed against the grand arched windows, turning the opulent living room into a sterile crime scene. Damien, still crumpled amidst the glass shards of his shattered table, watched as the front door was kicked off its hinges—not by his hired security, but by men in tactical gear with insignias that signaled federal authority.
Richard did not look back at the chaos behind him. He kept his arm wrapped firmly around Emma, steering her away from the center of the room. She was trembling, her light-colored dress stained with the grime of the floor and the blood from her lip, but she moved with a newfound, shaky purpose. She didn’t look at the man she had been forced to call a husband for two years.
“Medical team, here!” Richard barked, and a paramedic was at their side within seconds, offering a blanket.
Emma sat on the edge of the velvet armchair, the only piece of furniture that hadn’t been overturned. She watched as Damien tried to rise, his arrogance flickering like a dying bulb. An agent stepped on his shoulder, pinning him back to the jagged floor, and the sound of steel cuffs clicking shut echoed through the high-ceilinged room.
Damien’s eyes darted to Richard, his voice ragged. “You think you can just do this? You have no jurisdiction here. This is a private estate, a domestic dispute!”
Richard walked slowly toward the man he had once considered a protégé, his posture relaxed and terrifyingly calm. He stopped just inches from Damien’s face, looking down at him with the detached curiosity one might reserve for a bug under a microscope.
“You always had a talent for missing the bigger picture, Damien,” Richard said, his voice barely rising above the hum of the cooling systems. “You assumed I was reacting to your temper. You assumed this was a rescue mission.”

Damien spat, his lip bleeding. “I know you hate me. I know you wanted her back.”
“I don’t care about your petty possessiveness,” Richard replied. “I care about the twenty million dollars in proprietary assets you siphoned from the holding company over the last eighteen months. You didn’t just abuse my daughter; you created a digital paper trail that led directly to a federal investigation.”
