Chapter 2 - Echoes of a Cold Inheritance

The morning air in the valley carried a crisp bite that reminded Emma she was truly alive. Back in the estate, every breath had been measured, every movement calculated to avoid triggering Damien’s mercurial temper. Here, the only sound was the rustle of pine needles and the distant murmur of the creek winding through the canyon.

Richard sat across from her at the small wooden kitchen table, nursing a cup of black coffee. His sharp eyes, usually hidden behind the exhausting armor of corporate boardrooms, looked relaxed, though the lines of tension around his mouth had not entirely vanished.

“The federal prosecutors filed the formal indictment an hour ago,” Richard said quietly, setting his mug down. “Bail has been denied. Given the international transfer patterns we uncovered, the judge considers him a severe flight risk.”

Emma stared into her tea, watching the steam curl upward. “I keep waiting for him to call. Even though I know his phone was confiscated, part of me still expects my cell to light up with his name, demanding to know where I am.”

“That’s conditioning, Emma, not reality,” Richard said firmly, reaching across the table to cover her hand with his own calloused palm. “He doesn’t have the leverage anymore. He doesn’t have the company, he doesn’t have his associates, and most importantly, he doesn’t have you.”

“Did you know from the very beginning?” Emma asked, looking up. “When we got married two years ago... did you know what kind of man he was?”

Richard’s expression darkened, a shadow passing over his features. “I suspected his ambitions outweighed his morals. But I underestimated his cruelty. I thought he was just another aggressive young executive trying to climb the ladder too fast. I didn’t realize he viewed marriage as a corporate acquisition.”
