Chapter 4 - The Price of Redemption

The chaos in the grand ballroom reached a fever pitch as Marcus Vance struggled violently against the tactical guards pinning him to the marble floor.
"Get your hands off me! Do you know who my uncle is?" Marcus shrieked, his face pressed hard against the cold stone, spit flying from his lips.
Alistair Vance stood paralyzed near the edge of the stage, watching his nephew humiliated in front of the most powerful elite in the country.
Alistair wanted to intervene, to use his immense political leverage and financial might to stop the madness, but one look at Julian's cold, impassive eyes froze him in his tracks.
He knew better.
Everyone in the room was finally beginning to understand what Alistair had realized the moment he stepped out of his SUV: Julian Cross was no longer just a brilliant programmer.
He was an executioner holding the kill-switch for their entire financial existence.
Julian walked down the steps of the dais, his leather shoes clicking steadily against the floor as the crowd parted before him like waves before a ship.
He stopped a few feet away from the writhing hedge fund manager.
"Let him up," Julian commanded quietly.
The tactical guards immediately released Marcus, stepping back into rigid stances.
Marcus scrambled up, panting heavily, rubbing his bruised shoulder while glaring at Julian with pure, unadulterated venom.
He straightened his ruined designer suit jacket with shaking hands.
"You think you've won something here?" Marcus hissed, his voice trembling with adrenaline and fury. "You've exposed a few offshore accounts? Big deal. In twenty-four hours, our legal teams will have injunctions filed against your servers, federal marshals will raid your facilities, and you'll be spending the rest of your natural life in a dark concrete cell under a terrorism charge!"
Several murmurs of agreement rippled through the panicked crowd.
Billionaires and politicians clutched at that thin thread of hope.
The legal system.
Their system.
The laws they had written, lobbied for, and bought over decades of political manipulation.
Julian let out a soft, dry chuckle.
It was a cold sound that didn't reach his eyes.
"Federal marshals, Marcus?" Julian asked, tilting his head slightly. "Which ones? The ones on your payroll in the Department of Justice, or the ones whose encrypted communications I downloaded to my personal drive five minutes before I walked through those front doors?"
Marcus faltered.
"You're bluffing," Marcus muttered, though his voice lacked conviction. "You can't possibly have—"
"Let's test that theory," Julian interrupted, turning back toward the massive projection screen.
With a flick of his wrist using a small wireless controller, the red ledger of illegal offshore accounts vanished from the display.
In its place appeared a live, real-time interactive map of the global financial network.
Nodes blinked in red, yellow, and blue across every continent.
"Ten years ago," Julian began, his voice echoing through the silent, spellbound hall, "when I was nineteen years old, I built Nexus. I gave it to this room. I gave it to men like Alistair Vance, to your investment syndicates, to your cartels of corporate greed, believing that decentralizing global transactions would eliminate human corruption and create a fair market."
Julian took a slow step toward the crowd, his gaze sweeping over the sea of pale, anxious faces.
"Instead, you bastardized it. You turned an engine of human progress into an instrument of absolute control. You rigged every market, engineered artificial recessions to buy up bankrupt assets for pennies, and crushed millions of innocent lives to pad your already obscenely bloated portfolios."
A senior senator from New York stepped forward, his face flushed with indignation.
"Young man, you are treading on dangerous ground! You are talking about treason against the financial stability of the United States! We are the backbone of this country's economy!"
Julian stopped and turned his gaze directly onto the senator.
"Senator Thomas," Julian said smoothly. "Shall we display the transaction logs from the energy conglomerate lobbying bill you pushed through last month? The one where three hundred thousand shares of stock were quietly transferred to a blind trust registered under your daughter's name?"
Senator Thomas instantly closed his mouth.
The color drained from his face as he took two steps backward into the crowd, desperately avoiding eye contact.
"You built an empire on sand," Julian continued, raising his voice slightly so every person in the ballroom heard every syllable. "And tonight, the tide is coming in. I didn't come here tonight to negotiate with criminals, and I certainly didn't come here to ask for your permission."
Julian raised his hand, holding up the matte-black drive.
"Every single illegal transaction, every backroom bribe, every market manipulation algorithm you've utilized over the past decade has just been uploaded to an autonomous dead-man's switch network. At midnight, if my system detects any attempt by anyone in this room to freeze my assets, deploy law enforcement, or retaliate in any way, the complete, unencrypted data package will automatically be broadcasted to every major news outlet, independent journalist, and public database on the planet."
Absolute, suffocating terror gripped the room.
No courts.
No lawyers.
No bribery.
Just total, irreversible exposure.
Alistair Vance slowly dropped to his knees on the marble floor, burying his face in his hands.
May you like
The titans of America had just been brought to their knees by a single man.
And Julian wasn't even close to finishing.
