Chapter 5 - The Trap at the Symphony

The night of the grand finale arrived under a sky heavy with dark clouds and dramatic tension. The Metropolitan Music Center was ablaze with bright searchlights cutting through the misty rain, casting long shadows across the red carpet. Limousines lined the block, dropping off high-society elite, record executives, and foreign diplomats.

Inside the building, security was tighter than ever. Guards in crisp black suits patrolled every corridor, but Maya noticed that many of them carried radio earpieces marked with a subtle gold insignia—the emblem of Vance Security, Eleanor’s private firm.

Backstage, Maya stood in her dressing room. She wore a simple, elegant dark blue dress that Marcus had managed to acquire for her—a stark contrast to the rags she had worn thirty-six hours ago. Yet her hands remained steady as she polished the worn varnish of *L'Ombre du Roi*.

The door opened, and Julian Vance stepped inside. The famed conductor looked tired, his brow heavy with worry.

"Maya," Julian said softly, closing the door behind him. "You look radiant tonight."

"Thank you, Maestro," Maya replied politely, setting her bow down.

Julian stepped closer, his eyes lingering on the violin resting on the table. "I must apologize for how you were treated during the preliminary round. I was quick to judge based on appearances. You possess a rare gift, Maya. A gift that comes along once in a generation."

"It's okay, Maestro," Maya said quietly. "People only see what they expect to see."

Julian sighed deeply, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a silver pen. He hesitated, looking at her with a mix of admiration and deep regret. "I came to tell you... whatever happens tonight, know that your music reached me. But there are forces at play here bigger than music, Maya. Powerful people who do not like to be exposed."

Maya looked at him sharply. "You know about Eleanor, don't you?"

Julian’s eyes widened in surprise, then his shoulders sagged. "She is my sister, Maya. I have turned a blind eye to her business for years, telling myself it wasn't my concern. But when I recognized that violin... I knew what she had done to your father."

"Then help me stop her," Maya urged, taking a step forward. "Help me clear my father's name!"

Before Julian could answer, the dressing room door clicked open. Two bulky security guards stepped inside, followed by Eleanor Vance herself. She was dressed in an opulent silver gown, her neck adorned with diamonds that sparkled coldly under the fluorescent lights.

"That will be all, Julian," Eleanor said, her voice smooth as ice. "Leave us with the contestant."

Julian looked at Maya, his expression torn with guilt, but he nodded slowly and walked out, the door closing behind him.

Eleanor stepped into the center of the room, her high heels clicking sharply against the tile floor. She looked down at the old violin on the table with a look of possessive hunger.

"So," Eleanor murmured, tracing a manicured fingernail along the instrument's scroll. "Thomas Lin’s daughter. You have his resilience, I’ll give you that. But your foolish persistence ends tonight."

"You killed my father," Maya said, her voice dripping with absolute venom.

"Your father was an uncooperative foolish man who didn't understand the real value of art," Eleanor replied coldly. "He was hired to restore a masterpiece, not to pry into my personal ledgers. And now, you have brought my property back to me."

Eleanor signaled to the two guards. "Take the case. And make sure Miss Lin suffers an tragic 'accident' on her way to the stage. A fall down the marble staircase should ensure she never plays again."

The guards stepped forward, but before they could lay a hand on Maya, the lights in the dressing room flickered violently and went completely black.

A sudden alarm blared through the building's PA system: *"Emergency hazard detected in Section B. All personnel proceed to fire exits."*

In the pitch blackness, a silhouette lunged into the room. A heavy metallic thud echoed, followed by the groan of a guard collapsing to the floor.

"Maya! Catch!" Marcus’s voice yelled through the dark.

May you like

Maya felt the smooth wooden neck of her violin thrust into her hand. Marcus grabbed her wrist, dragging her past the disoriented guards and out into the bustling hallway as emergency strobe lights began to flash red against the walls.
