Chapter 14 - The Final Byte

The metal roll-up door shrieked as a heavy crowbar wedged beneath the bottom seal, forcing it upward with a screech of tortured steel. Rainwater and cold wind rushed into the stuffy storage unit, carrying the harsh glare of headlights from outside.

“Thirty seconds!” Agent Vance shouted, his weapon trained on the widening gap beneath the door. “Get back, both of you!”

Mara’s fingers hammered the keyboard with blinding speed. The computer screen flashed a violent amber warning: *WARNING: PARITY ERROR IN BYTE 4096. ENTER MASTER OVERRIDE OR SYSTEM WILL WIPE.*

“Mara, it’s going to wipe!” I yelled, stepping closer to the desk.

“I know what I’m doing!” Mara shouted back, her face pale, her eyes locked on the scrolling hexadecimal code. “Daniel used his old corporate passwords based on his Harvard rowing team roster... row four, seat two...!”

She typed four characters. *G-E-R-9.*

The rattling at the door stopped abruptly. A heavy shadow fell across the opening as someone peered underneath.

On the monitor, the amber warning text flickered... then turned a brilliant, solid **GREEN**.

*SYSTEM OVERRIDE SUCCESSFUL. DEAD-MAN’S SWITCH DEACTIVATED. ALL FILES TRANSFERRED TO SECURE FEDERAL ARCHIVE.*

I let out a breath I felt like I’d been holding for five years. My knees buckled slightly, and I caught myself against the edge of the metal desk.

At that exact second, the storage unit door flew all the way open. Two private security guards in heavy black tactical vests stood in the entrance, their flashlights blinding us.

“Federal agents! Drop your weapons!” Agent Vance roared, stepping forward with his badge held high and his service weapon locked squarely on the guards.

The security guards blinked against the harsh light, looked at Vance’s badge, looked at the federal insignia on our jackets, and slowly lowered their hands, stepping backward into the rain.

“False alarm, dispatch,” one of the guards muttered into his shoulder radio, turning on his heel and jogging back toward their parked SUV.

Mara slammed the laptop shut, unhooked the master hard drive, and slid it into her tactical pouch with a triumphant grin. “Server secured. The files protecting your sister are in federal custody, Claire. Mercer’s dead-man switch is dead.”

I stood in the center of the damp, echoing storage unit, listening to the steady patter of the rain outside. The weight that had crushed my chest for half a decade finally lifted, dissolving into the cold night air.

“It’s over,” I whispered.

“Not quite,” Agent Vance said, checking his watch as his phone buzzed with an incoming secure transmission. “Mercer’s arraignment hearing is in four hours. Sterling and Marcus are trying to cut a plea deal with the DA, claiming they were forced under duress.”

Mara zipped her tactical vest. “Then I guess we have a courtroom to crash.”

By 9:00 AM, the federal district courtroom was packed to capacity. Reporters, financial analysts, and local elites filled the gallery, whispering nervously among themselves.

Daniel Mercer sat at the defense table, wearing a crisp charcoal suit, his dark hair neatly combed. When the courtroom doors opened and I walked down the center aisle—flanked by Mara Ruiz and Agent Vance—Daniel turned his head.

For a split second, I saw genuine confusion flicker across his face. He expected me to be cowering in a hotel room, broken by his threats against my sister. Instead, I walked with my head held high, looking him dead in the eye.

Judge Thomas Vance banged his gavel. “All rise for the court.”

Daniel stood up, buttoning his jacket, whispering something to his new defense attorney. He still believed he had an ace up his sleeve.

He didn't know we had just dealt a royal flush.
