Chapter 17 - Whispers in the Dark

The sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in bruised shades of purple and orange as Mara unlocked her apartment door. The quiet of the room felt different tonight—not like safety, but like the calm before a hurricane.

“I’m going to take a hot shower and sleep for twelve hours,” Mara groaned, tossing her tactical jacket onto the sofa and rubbing her temples. “If anyone calls, tell them the police department is officially closed.”

“Go ahead,” I smiled softly, walking over to the small kitchenette to pour a glass of water. “I’ll stay up and check the federal news feeds.”

Mara disappeared down the hallway, and the bathroom door clicked shut, followed shortly by the sound of running water.

I sat at the cluttered kitchen table, opening my laptop. The news headlines were a feeding frenzy: *‘Oakridge Golden Boy Daniel Mercer Exposed in Massive Multi-Million Dollar Embezzlement and Domestic Terror Plot.’* Social media was flooded with shock, outrage, and memes of his arrest outside the country club.

I scrolled through the comments, feeling a strange, hollow detachment. It was as if I were reading about strangers in a movie.

Then, my phone buzzed on the table.

It wasn't an email. It wasn't a text from Mara or Agent Vance. It was a direct push notification from an encrypted messaging app I had uninstalled three weeks ago—an app Daniel had forced me to download on my old phone.

My breath hitched. My fingers hovered over the screen.

The app icon was glowing red with a single unread message from an unknown sender named *‘Observer_01’*.

I tapped it.

The message contained a single digital photograph, time-stamped *7:42 PM*—less than ten minutes ago.

It was a picture of me, sitting right here at Mara’s kitchen table, taken through the side window from the alleyway outside.

And beneath the photo was a text line: *‘Nice try, Claire. But the king doesn't need to be in the castle to win the game.’*

My heart stopped. I jumped up from the table, knocking my chair backward with a loud crash against the hardwood floor.

“Claire? Everything okay?” Mara’s voice called out over the sound of the shower.

“Mara!” I screamed, sprinting toward the hallway. “Mara, get out of the bathroom! Now!”

Before she could answer, the apartment’s master circuit breaker outside in the hallway clicked off with a heavy, metallic thud. All the lights in the apartment instantly died, plunging us into absolute, pitch-black darkness.

From the front hallway, the heavy deadbolt turned with a slow, deliberate click.
