Chapter 12 - Restoring the Neighborhood

The following morning, I visited old man Henderson, our neighbor whose farm sat directly across the creek. Two years ago, Henderson had mysteriously lost his cattle ranch and livestock overnight, forced into a sudden nursing home residency by one of Marcus Vance’s shell companies under suspicious circumstances.

I found Henderson living in a cramped, dilapidated trailer parked behind his abandoned ranch, looking broken and defeated.

"Mr. Henderson," I called out, stepping up to his rusted aluminum screen door.

The old man peered out, his cloudy eyes squinting behind thick glasses. When he recognized me in my military jacket, his weathered face trembled. "Daniel? You’re back from the war? I heard... I heard what happened to your folks. I’m sorry, son. This county is owned by wolves now."

I pulled the federal restitution documents from my jacket and handed them to him through the screen.

"Not anymore, Mr. Henderson," I said quietly. "Marcus Vance’s assets have been seized by federal authorities. According to the court records, your ranch deed was fraudulently transferred under coercion. The federal judge has ordered the title restored to your name, effective immediately."

Henderson stared at the official federal seal on the document, his hands trembling so violently he dropped his coffee mug onto the porch floor. The ceramic shattered into a dozen pieces, but he didn't even notice. Tears welled up in his cloudy eyes, streaming down his deeply lined cheeks as he sank slowly onto his wooden stool.

"My land..." he whispered, his voice cracking with decades of suppressed grief. "My grandfather planted those apple orchards... I thought I’d die in this trailer, knowing I let my family down..."

"You didn't let anyone down, Mr. Henderson," I said, placing a steadying hand on his frail shoulder. "Pack your bags. We’re going home."
