Chapter 8 - The Unraveling of Empire

The silence in the county clerk’s office was absolute. The two private security guards hired by Marcus exchanged uneasy glances, quietly stepping back toward the exit and blending into the hallway crowd. They weren't paid enough to catch federal felony charges for a sinking real estate fraudster.
Marcus Vance stood paralyzed, his million-dollar smile replaced by the hollow stare of a man whose entire criminal empire had just collapsed in sixty seconds.
"Sign the paperwork, Marcus," I said, placing the official deed reversal forms on the counter in front of him. "Sign every single document restoring full, unencumbered ownership of my family’s farm, timberland, and homestead back to my father, effective immediately."
Marcus looked at the papers, then up at me, his hands shaking uncontrollably as he reached for a pen. "If I sign these... will you hold back the federal wire fraud files from the prosecutor?"
"You don't get to negotiate terms, Marcus," I replied, my voice dropping an octave into a tone that brooked zero argument. "You sign the deeds right now, or I let the Department of Justice bury you under the maximum statutory penalty. You choose: prison or ruin."
With trembling fingers, Marcus uncapped the pen and scribbled his signature across the legal lines, his handwriting jagged and unreadable. Thomas Jenkins, shaking like a leaf, stamped the documents with the official county seal, his hands slippery with nervous sweat.
I picked up the signed deeds, sliding them into my waterproof folder.

"Pleasure doing business with you, gentlemen," I said coldly. "Don't leave town. Federal marshals hate when people try to skip bail."
As I turned and walked out of the courthouse with Sarah Jenkins and her crew following closely behind, I caught one final glimpse of Marcus Vance collapsing into a wooden chair, burying his face in his hands as his multi-million-dollar real estate empire dissolved into dust around him.
