CHAPTER 6: THE ICE-BOUND TRAIL OF WHISPERING HILL

Winter descended upon Yorkshire with an aggressive, sudden brutality that seemed to trap Blackwood in ice overnight. Thick, heavy clouds rolled over the horizon, unloading a massive blanket of snow that buried the stone cottages and filled the thung lũng with three feet of freezing white powder. The familiar dirt tracks leading up to Whispering Hill—the highest point in the region—became completely hidden, replaced by a steep, treacherous trail of packed snow and hidden ice.

On a freezing Saturday afternoon, the air was so cold that every breath Chloe took turned into a thick puff of white vapor. Feeling trapped after spending a long, suffocating week inside the house, she decided to take Barnaby out for some fresh air. She wore her thick wool winter coat, its bright crimson fabric standing out like a drop of blood against the blinding white landscape. Around Barnaby’s neck, she had wrapped the green-and-black striped wool scarf her father had lovingly knitted for him. The mountain path was eerily quiet, save for the biting wind that rattled the icy needles of the barren pine trees.

However, the peaceful isolation did not last. As Chloe and Barnaby navigated a narrow bend halfway up the hill, a series of loud, mocking shouts echoed down from the ridge above.

Chloe’s stomach dropped instantly. Looking up, she saw Julian, Marcus, and Leo standing at the top of a steep incline. They held heavy wooden sleds with steel runners, their faces flushed red from the cold and an ugly excitement. When Julian spotted the bright red coat of the girl below, a cruel grin split his face.

"Well, well, look what the blizzard dragged in!" Julian yelled down the slope, his loud voice cutting through the wind. "It's the tin-soldier and her three-legged garbage pile! Hey, metal-leg, did your dad install snow tires on that thing?"

Chloe instinctively tightened her grip on Barnaby’s leather leash. The dog had already halted, his ears flattening against his skull as he let out a low, uneasy whine. "Let's turn back, Barnaby," Chloe whispered, her heart hammering against her ribs. "We don't need to be here."

But Julian had no intention of letting them escape. Eager to display his cruelty, he hopped onto his wooden sled, gave it a powerful shove, and came careening down the slope, spraying a blinding wall of white powder directly into Chloe’s face. Marcus and Leo followed right behind him, effectively blockading the narrow trail.

"What's the matter, robot? Lost your steering wheel in the snow?" Julian mocked, stepping off his sled and kicking a wave of loose ice toward Barnaby. The puppy flinched, tucking his tail tightly between his legs and trembling violently against Chloe's calf. The old, familiar fear of human cruelty was paralyzing him.

"Leave us alone, Julian," Chloe said, her voice shaking as she tried to step around him. "We're just walking. We aren't doing anything to you."

"I don't care what you're doing. I don't like looking at a freak on my hill," Julian sneered. He bent down, scooped up a handful of wet, heavy snow, and packed it tightly around a sharp piece of jagged slate he found protruding from the ice. Before Chloe could even raise her arms to shield herself, Julian hurled the icy rock with vicious force.

Smack!

The hard, stone-filled snowball struck Chloe violently on the right side of her temple. The impact was dizzying, cutting open a small gash near her hairline that instantly began to bleed. The force knocked her completely off balance. She stumbled backward, her left boot slipping on a hidden sheet of black ice beneath the powder.

Chloe crashed heavily down the steep, snow-covered bank. As her body slid down the incline, her right leg jammed with terrifying force into the deep, frozen root system of an ancient, gnarled pine tree. A sharp, white-hot agony flared up her thigh as the carbon-fiber socket twisted violently against her residual limb. The prosthetic leg was completely trapped, locked beneath the frozen roots like a steel trap.

"Ahhh! Help!" Chloe screamed out in pure, agonizing pain, her tears freezing on her pale, injured face. She grabbed at the roots, desperately trying to pull her leg free, but the ice had sealed them shut like concrete.

Julian and his friends laughed hysterically from the top of the bank, completely unmoved by her cries. Julian raised his heavy wooden sled-rope, spinning the heavy knots in the air as he started to climb down toward her. "Look at her! The machine broke down in the cold! Let's see if we can pop that metal leg off again, boys!"
