CHAPTER 7: THE TENSION RISING IN THE COLD

The chilling sound of Julian’s boots crunching through the packed snow echoed down the slope, drawing closer with every agonizing second. Behind him, Marcus and Leo stood at the top of the bank, cheering their leader on with mocking laughter.
"Look at her shake!" Marcus shouted, pointing a gloved finger at Chloe. "She’s freezing up like an old rusty tractor!"
"Don't let her get away, Julian! Break the other one too!" Leo hooted, throwing another packed ice-ball that shattered against the trunk of the pine tree, showering Chloe's face with freezing white shards.
Chloe writhed against the unyielding wood, her hands scraped and bleeding from trying to tear the frozen pine roots away from her carbon-fiber leg. The metal joint was wedged tightly at an unnatural angle. Every time she twisted her body, a sharp, white-hot scream was ripped from her lungs as the rigid socket dug mercilessly into her bruised residual thigh.
"Please, Julian, stop!" she wept, her voice cracked and breaking against the howling mountain wind. She threw her arms up, covering her face as Julian stepped onto the small ledge where she lay trapped. "Don't touch it! It hurts... please!"
Julian didn't care. The absolute helplessness of his victim only fueled his arrogant malice. He stood over her, his eyes cold and dark with a cruel, unchecked power. He raised the heavy wooden sled-rope, the thick, icy knots swinging inches from Chloe’s face. Then, with a mocking grin, he slammed the heavy wooden handle of his sled down onto her exposed carbon-fiber shin.
CLANG!
The sharp, metallic ringing sound echoed through the silent forest. The impact didn't break the high-tech fiber, but the violent vibration traveled instantly up the metal pylon, slamming straight into Chloe's injured stump. She screamed out in sheer, suffocating agony, her body arching before she collapsed backward into the snow, sobbing uncontrollably.
"See? I told you it wouldn't break!" Julian laughed, turning back to show off to his friends. He raised the wooden handle again, aiming directly for the delicate mechanical knee joint. "Let's see how much force it takes to snap the bolts off this freakish toy!"
Barnaby stood just three feet away, his body shaking violently in the freezing powder. The heavy green scarf around his neck fluttered wildly in the wind. The old, deeply ingrained terrors of his past—the memories of the crushing steel fox trap, the beatings from his former master, the loud shouts of angry humans—were roaring in his mind, telling him to run, telling him to hide in the deep brush and save himself. His tail was tucked so tightly against his belly that it hurt, and his crippled hind leg trembled against the snow.
Julian swung the wooden handle back, preparing a massive blow to shatter Chloe's prosthetic knee.

"Barnaby... please..." Chloe choked out through her heavy sobs, her terrified eyes locking onto her dog as she shielded her face with her bleeding hands. "Help me... don't let him... please..."
That desperate, broken cry from the only human who had ever loved him pierced through Barnaby’s terror like a flash of blinding lightning.
