1. The Obsession Begins: The Man at the Edge

It began on a bleak late-autumn Sunday, following a family picnic at the edge of the Blackwood National Forest. At first, the changes in ten-year-old Thomas were subtle—the once vibrant, hyperactive boy suddenly became hollow and withdrawn. He abandoned his tablet, his favorite toys, and his friends. Instead, a deeply unsettling routine took hold of him: every night, precisely at 11:00 PM, when the rest of the house was swallowed by darkness, Thomas would stand frozen at his bedroom window. His eyes, wide and unblinking, stared intensely into the abyssal depth of the ancient woods behind their home.

Initially, his mother assumed he was sleepwalking or experiencing a sudden fear of the dark. But one night, when she stepped in to gently guide him back to bed, she found his skin ice-cold to the touch, drenched in sweat despite the freezing winter air. His pupils were dilated, locked onto a vacuum-like void amidst the skeletal trees. When she frantically questioned him, Thomas didn't cry. He slowly turned his head, looking right through her, and whispered in a flat, mechanical, entirely emotionless voice:

"He has no eyes, Mommy. But I know he is looking at me. He is so tall, taller than the young trees out there, wearing a perfectly tailored black suit. He has no mouth, but I can hear him laughing... the sound just buzzes inside my head."

Thomas’s parents desperately tried to rationalize it as a childhood nightmare, convincing themselves he was just seeing the distorted shadows of branches beneath the moonlight. However, they could not ignore the terrifying behavior of Toby—their German Shepherd, a dog known for his fierce bravery. Since that fateful night, Toby completely refused to step foot into the backyard, not even by a single inch. The moment twilight fell, the dog would scramble into the darkest corner beneath the staircase, his entire body trembling violently. He would whimper in a pitiful, agonizing tone, clawing at the hardwood floorboards until his paws bled. An invisible, suffocating dread had settled over the household.
